--THE can refer to a proper noun



--THE can refer to something that is mentioned nearby

  eg Dt04-32c >Has anyone heard THE GREAT THING-that God
  saved a nation enslaved in another nation with great miracles<

  Thus the phrase >THE GREAT THING< refers to the verse that
  follows >That God saved a nation enslaved in another nation<



--THE can refer to a concept, story or thing mentioned
  ELSEWHERE (but not immediately afterwards)

  eg Nu13-33a >We saw there THE Nefilim<
  This refers to the NEFILLIM nation mentined in Gn06-04



--THE can refer to the best known of a class

  eg  Dt01-07e >THE Mount< -- This refers to The Kings Mountain

The Bible is describing the functions of the golden altar

THE VERSE
---------
Ex30-10 And Aaron will once a year use the altar horns
        for an atonement procedure from the blood of

THE RASHI
---------
There are of course many sin offerings that offer
atonement. But >THE< Atonement (offering) refers to
the offering of >THE DAY OF ATONEMENT< (Yom Kippur)
described in Lv16

THE VERSE: >THE< Holiday of Gathering

THE RASHI: This of course refers to SUCCOTH when
           the grain is GATHERED.

Ex23-31b >THE (Famous/well known)< River =  The PRATH River

Cf Gn02-14b where the 4 rivers that flowed from the Garden of
Eden are mentioned. The Bible concludes the LIST of 4 rivers
with the PRATH RIVERS. Using the principle of CLIMAX Rashi
observes that this river was the most superior of all rivers.
