VERSE: Nu10-30a

RASHIS COVERED: Nu10-30a Nu05-02c Lv22-05b Lv22-05d

===================== Nu10-30a ================================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently infers conclusions from the OVERALL
PARAGRAPH structure and its development style

EXAMPLE Lv22-04:07 Nu05-02
---------------------------
The above verses NATURALLY form a Biblical Paragraph
that BULLETS possibilities of becoming IMPURE followed
by a purification procedure. Here is the outline

- INTRODUCTION: If a priest become impure thru
- BULLET--1--- Leprosy
- BULLET--2--- Unusual flows
- BULLET--3--- Or if he touches someone UNCLEAN to the dead
- BULLET--4--- Or a man with seminal flow
- BULLET--5--- Or he touches a dead animal
- BULLET--6--- Or he touches a man IN ANY STATE OF UNCLEANESS
- CONCLUSION When he becomes impure he cant eat offerings

As can be seen BULLETS (3) and (6) seem to refer to
touching UNCLEAN men. Since this is a bulleted list
it is natural to identify these as two cases:
- BULLET 3 refers to a priest who touches someone
who had touched a dead man
- BULLET 6 refers to a priest who touches a dead man himself

An almost similar Rashi applies to Nu05-02c
- SEND OUT OF THE CAMP
- BULLET A: any LEPOR
- BULLET B: any person with UNUSUAL FLOWS
- BULLET C: any person UNCLEAN TO THE SPIRIT

Thus bullet A corresponds to bullet 1 above
Similarly Bullet B corresponds to Bullet 2 above
We conclude that Bullet C corresponds to Bullets 3 and 6.
That is the BULLETED structure leads us to interpret the
words UNCLEAN TO SPIRIT to refer to UNCLEAN BY CONTACT
WITH A DEAD PERSON WHOSE SPIRIT HAS LEFT HIM(Or contact
with a person who touched a dead body)

We infer further items from the 2 bulleted structures.
- We infer that BULLET B includes both unusual and
usual flows (Bullets 2 and 4)

- We infer that BULLET C includes bullets 3,5,6--that
is contact with anything dead.

This method of inference--based on broad paragraph design
differs from the traditional methods--say that of the Malbim,
-- who makes these inferences from INDIVIDUAL WORDS (vs
PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE)--that is the phrases ALL people
with flow and ALL people with uncleanness to the spirit
implies that ALL unclean people are included in the law.

EXAMPLE Nu10-30a
----------------
Jethro refuses Moses offer to stay with the Jewish
people. Jethro explains that he must return
- TO my LAND
- TO my BIRTHPLACE
The repeated KEYWORD, TO, has a bullet like effect
It indicates two reasons for returning to ones country.
Rashi further explains these two reasons
- LAND=place of contacts for JOBS
- BIRTHPLACE=Place of family members

BULLET-6 ANY STATE OF UNCLEANESS*1 C Unclean to spirit

NOTES
-----
*1 The precise Rashi argument is as follows
   - The paragraph structure CLEARLY shows a BULLETED LIST
   - Hence we are justified in identifying each BULLET
   as a separate item
   - But bullets 3 and 6 seem to refer to contact with humans
   - So Rashi interprets bullet 3 as a priest who touches
a person who touched a dead body
   - but bullet 6 refers to a priest who touches a dead body

   Furthermore,
since bullet 6 states IN ANY UNCLEAN STATE we are justified
in including all unclean human states (CONTACT WITH DEAD,
   LEPROSY, UNUSUAL FLOW)*10

*2 Of course verse Nu05-02 only lists Bullets A,B,C once.
I have repeated them to show the correspondence with
Lv22-04:07. The paragraph design itself suggests that
the 3 Bullets of Nu05-02 (A,B,C) refer to the same
class of items in Bullets 1,2,3,4,5,6 in Lv22-04:07.

That is both paragraphs refer to the same classes
   of unclean people
   - Lepors
   - People with flows (Unusual or ordinary)
   - Contact with dead (Dead people,dead animals,or
     people who touched dead people)
We clearly see here that the inference is based on
PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE vs NUANCES OF WORDS *11

------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------

*10 LIST005n presents the five meanings of ALL (one of which
is ANY which indicates that ANY uncleanness can be
    included - NO EXCEPTION)

*11 This method of inference--based on broad paragraph design
differs from the traditional methods--say that of the Malbim,
-- who makes these inferences from INDIVIDUAL WORDS (vs
PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE)--that is Malbim infers from
the phrases--ALL people with flow and ALL people with
uncleanness to the spirit--Malbim infers from these
phrases that we include ALL unclean people(Unusual vs
   ordinary flows etc).

I believe this example hilights the difference between my
approach (Emphasis on paragraph structure and broad sweeping
design) vs the traditional approach of say Nechama Leibowitz,
Rabbi Boncheck, or Malbim. While there might be sympathy
for making inferences from the word ALL, I think that my
position, that inferences can be made from PARAGRAPH DESIGN
   is equally cogent.

In passing I would answer Malbim as follows:
   - The sifrah in Lv22-04:07 clearly derives from the word
   - ALL that the laws apply eg to other unclean people such as
   - those who have had contact with a lepor
   - (vs the lepor himself) Since the Sifrah makes this
   - inference in Leviticus I think a similar inference is
   - justified in Numbers.

   At any rate to summarize:
   - The references of the Bullets in Lv and Nu are made,
according to me, based on broad paragraph design.
Both sets of bullets refer to the same items
   - Malbim however infers the sameness of reference
based on the meaning and nuances of individual words
like ALL which indicates broad meaning.
   - I go further and infer from the word ALL that all other
unclean people are included in these laws.

This is a fundamental difference in approach--carefully
   review this and understand it.
