GOALS:
------
I decided its time for a longer unit.

This unit will focus on a major Rashi task--explaining
the MEANINGS OF WORDS.

Explaining the MEANINGS of WORDS is more than looking
something up in a dictionary. There are METHODS to
explaining WORDS.

Thus in this module we will explore HOW Rashi determines
the meanings of words -- that is, we will explore WHAT
RASHIS METHODS ARE

TODAYS UNIT
-----------
As I mentioned I am closing this unit soon. However I did
not want to leave this unit without mentioning a major word
meaning method---the methodof ROOT+PREPOSITION.It was Malbims
discovery (Lv01-01) that the unit of meaning is not the
3 letter root but rather the COMBINATION of 3-letter-root and
PREPOSITION. That is the same 3 letter root can have different
meanings depending on the GRAMMATICAL MODE and CONNECTING
PREPOSITION used. The idea that meaning changes based on
grammatical mode is very old and is already mentioned by e.g.
the RADACK. Some examples are presented this time and next time.

BACKGROUND
==========
The meaning of the root YRASH depends on the grammatical mode
used.

(1) In the KAL MODE,Y-R-SH means to INHERIT as in
Gn21-10 "He won't INHERIT with my son Isaac"

(2) In the PIEL MODE, Y-R-SH means to BECOME POOR as in
Gn45-11 "Lest you become POOR"

(3) In the HIFIL MODE, Y-R-SH means to conquer as in
Nu21-32 "And they CONQUERED the Emori which was there"

EXAMPLE 77: Dt28-42a
EXAMPLE 78: Dt28-42b
EXAMPLE 79: Dt28-42c
====================
Since YRSH occurs in Dt28-42 in the HIFIL mode, the proper
translation would be
--------------------------------------------------------------
The LOCUSTS will IMPOVERISH (CONQUER) the tree from its fruits
--------------------------------------------------------------

Rashi notes that the other two meanings THE LOCUSTS WILL
CONQUER YOUR TREES or the LOCUSTS WILL INHERIT YOUR
TREES do not fit in.
