VERSE: Lv23-42c
RULE: Rashi has 3 methods by which to explain FULL-DEFICIENT Biblical
spellings:
EXAMPLES:
(1) Deficient Spelling=Deficient Person-
>"And Abraham paid EPHRN"--
>EPHRN was a bad deficient person(because he lied to Abraham)
(2) Deficient spelling = Deficiency in Plurality--not ALL necessary;
>"Write the Mezuzahs on your DORPOSTS"--
>You don't need Mezuzahs on BOTH doorposts
(3) Deficient spelling indicates a pun *2
>"This is My Name FOREVR"
>FOREVR spelled deficiently looks like the Hebrew word HIDDEN
>So the pun is "Gods full name should be HIDDEN(Not pronounced)"
NOTES
-----
About 2 dozen examples are brought in the main posting
illustrating the above 3 principles. They are compactly
presented in the attached list which however may
at times be a bit terse. See the main postings for
full explanations.
--------------GRAND SUMMARY *1----------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
The following examples illustrate how DEFICIENT SPELLINGS
refer to DEFICIENT BAD PEOPLE
-----------------------------------------------------------
VERSE WORD METHOD INTERPRETATION
======== ====== ========= ===========================

-----------------------------------------------------------
VERSE WORD METHOD INTERPRETATION

-----------------------------------------------------------
The following examples illustrate how DEFICIENT SPELLINGS
indicate puns--that is the deficiently spelled word looks
like another word and therefore the sentence is read as
a double sentence
-----------------------------------------------------------

NOTES
-----
*1
Column 1 = VERSE = Verse where Rashi occurs
Column 2 = WORD = which word is deficint
COlumn 3 = Method= which of 4 methods used
COlumn 4 = Interpretation resulting from method
*2 Gn23 lists EPHRONS name 8 times: This is the only time
it is spelled deficiently. Ephron was deficient because
he promised to give the field for nothing but in the
end gave it for "full currency"
*3 Jacob = Exile (Jacob symbolizes exile)
The FULLY spelled Jacob=FULL exile=including redemption
See Gn49-01 for an explicit statement of this
Rashi expresses this idea using a pun (Jacob "loaned"
the "vav" from Elijah). However what we have presented
here is the simple meaning of the text.
*4 By PUN' with a prime we mean that the puns meaning is
woven with the regular meaning (So eg in the other
examples the PUN sentence and ACTUAL sentence are
separate as in
>Don't settle a DISPUTE by giving in
>Don't disagree with a Rabbi
However in these examples the PUN sentence and original
sentence become one as in
>they are sitting opposite me
>they are OPPOSING me
In other words it really means
>They are sitting opposite me in military formation
*5 Another application of this pun principle occurs in
Ex16-20c says "And those with left over manna saw that the manna
RAISED WORMS and BECAME PUTRID"
PUTRID should be spelled with a KAMATZ, the punctuation used at
the end of complete thought. It is instead spelled with a PATACH
the punctuation used in the middle of a sentence.
So Rashi interprets this as a pun
"The manna BECAME PUTRID, RAISED WORMS, and became MORE PUTRID"
In other words the extra putrification exposed those who left the
manna over since the odor was visible.
*6 Another example where deficient spelling is interpreted
as not including all cases is
Nu17-25a "..and place this stick symbol in the ark as a
symbol so that their COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE
SUPREMACY OF MOSAIC PROPHECY will stop"
Rashi explains that a fully spelled word COMPLAINTS would
indicate that all future complaints on any topic are being
stopped. However this stick symbol only addressed the
supremacy of mosaic prophecy. HENCE the word COMPLAINTS is
spelled DEFICIENTLY--it only refers to COMPLAINTS ABOUT
MOSAIC PROPHECY (This is all spelled out by Rashi)
