------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE: Lv13-06b
In all these verses Rashi gives WORD MEANINGS or rules of
grammar. We group these Rashis by similarity of method
We note 5 methods.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
METHOD 1: Words whose meaning comes from a PREFIX/SUFFIX letter
-----------------------------------------------------------------
RULE: Words beginning with the Hebrew letter MEM mean
the PLACE where something takes place
EXAMPLES
--------
WORD MEANING ETYMOLOGY USING MM=PLACE
==== ======= ========================
(1) MZBaCh Altar Place (M) of Sacrifice (TVCh)
(2) MShKN House-Palace Place (M) where you dwell (Schan)
(3) MREH Mirror Place (M) of Sight (RAH)
(4) MGDOL Tower Place (M) that is tall ( GDL)
(5) MKDSH Temple Place (M) of Holiness (KDSH)*1
(6) SFM Mustache Place (M) of Mouth*1
(7) MSPCH Skin Growth Place (M) where added skin is forming*2
NOTES:
------
*1 Cited by Rashi
*2 Rashi Lv13-06b MiSPaChaTH = A GROWTH (From YSF = TO add)
-------------------------------------------------------
METHOD 2: These items are named by ATTRIBUTES of them
-------------------------------------------------------
RULE: Deep wounds/abcesses are
denoted by words meaning LOW(SCh) or LESS (PChTh).
EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Lv13-11 ShChiN = BOIL (An inflammation not caused by heat)
Most probably ShChiN comes from SCh=Low and denotes
an abcess deep (low) in the skin*1
(2) Lv13-55 PChTheTh from PChTh= Pit
So PChTheTh = a Deep Wound
NOTES:
------
*1
One of my students in my Lower Merion Synagogue class
suggested that the Leprosy symptom of "A deeper looking white
like the deeper look of the sun from a shadow" could
mean that it gives the appearance of a deep wound (which
gives more intensity in appearance)--in other words,
DEEP=INTENSE LOOKING.(I have not found any other
satisfactory explanation of the description of leprosy whiteness
as "the sun looks DEEPER than a surrounding shadow".
----------------------------------------------------------
METHOD 3: This meaning of these words is determined by
OTHER VERSES with the same root In many cases
the roots only occur one or 2 more times
----------------------------------------------------------
RULE: Lv13-23 TzRV = a SCAB. The root only occurs 2 other times.
EXAMPLES
---------
(1) Ez-21-3 "..and all faces will become scabbed from
this hugh fire" (In fact big forest fires can cause
burns and scabs...one of the symptoms of a second
degree burn)
(2) Prv-16-27 "...A wicked person digs (looks) for
trouble and his lips are scabbed with fire (i.e
it is very easy to reopen the wound)"
RULE: The Hebrew root B-H-R means SPARKLING LIGHT
EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Lv13-38 BeHaRoth-Sparkling White skin patch
(2) Job37-21 This verse describes the
aftermath of a rainstorm--"..a bright sparkle
in the overcast skies..."--apparently BHR
comes from both BRH=separate and BRH=opulent
and would denote the type of "break"thru in the
skies we see after a storm. It would denote a
sparkling piece of light (BRH) breaking thru
(Separating) the clouds
NOTES:
-----
In the main posting a detailed discussion of the differences
between Rashi and Rambam on whether there are 3 or 4 types of
leprosy is presented
RULE: TChTh means IN ITS PLACE.
The Hebrew word TChTh has 6 meanings
EXAMPLES
--------
The Hebrew TChTH can mean
(1)Instead,as in Is55-13 INSTEAD of a Thornbush there will sproutings
(2)Bottom,as in Gn06-16 3rd, 2nd and BOTTOM floors will be in the ark ..
(3)Place,as in Ex16-29 ..every person sit in his PLACE
(4)Because,as in 2S19-22 BECAUSE of this will he not die
(5)Steathily,as in 2S3-12 ...STEAHILY saying:"Whose is this:
(6)Subjugation,as in 2S22-41 Kneel my enemies underneath me
-------------------------------------------------------------
METHOD 4: The meaning of some words comes from CONTEXT
-------------------------------------------------------------
(1) BHK (Lv13-39b) means "a breakout" in the skin as in
Lv13-39b "if the priest sees WHITE PATCHES that
have BLOSSOMED in the skin then they are
"BHK" and the person is pure"
NOTES
------
*1 Perhaps this is related to other roots with B-K which
mean to breakout.
-----------------------------------------------------------
METHOD 5:RULE: 2 word phrases can mean either COMBINATIONS
of both words or a NEW ENTITY
-----------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLES
---------
(1) Lv13-39a WEAK WHITE = Not Weak AND white but a Weaker White
(Rashi's point is that WEAK is an adjective not a noun)
(2) v3-13-19 REDISH WHITE = PINK
(Again Rashi's point is that the red is an adjective
The Rambam gives the analogy of a few drops of blood
in Milk. So MILK=White while the Blood-dropped-milk
would be pinkish, not a mixture of RED and WHITE)
