VERSE: Lv08-26a
RASHIS COVERED: Lv08-26a Ex29-02a Ex29-23a Ex29-23b
Ex29-23c Lv02-07a
======================= Lv08-26a ======================
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Many Rashis focus on meaning of words or grammatical
function. However some Rashis focus on comparisons
with other verses.
Occasionally the Torah will repeat almost verbatim
the same Chapters. In such a case a fundamental
goal of Rashi is to elucidate
- which items in the repeated chapters CORRESPOND
- which items are new
- which items are different
One such set of repeated chapters is Ex29 and Lv08
both of which describe in detail the CONSECRATION
OF THE TEMPLE & PRIESTS.
The lists below describe the 6 main units in the
CONSECRATION chapters and where these occur in
Ex29 and Lv08. Todays posting focuses on the
3 MINCHAH offerings which are repeated 4 times
in the Torah. Rashis fundamental goal is to
indicate how the repeated items correspond to each
other.

======================= LIST212a ===========
Ex29 and Lv08 are almost identical. They
describe the consecration procedure. The
consecration procedure had 6 units. These
6 units are listed below along with the
corresponding verses in each chapter.
Further lists compare these individual
units

============= LIST212b ===================================================
The 3 minchahs of the CONSECRATION
CEREMONY are mentioned 4 times.
We ALIGN these 4 citations below and
show which phrases correspond. Footnotes
further elaborate on the WHY of these alignments.
These footnotes comprise half a dozen

NOTES
-----
*1 Lv02 is the Biblical chapter that outlines the 5
types of Minchah offerings. 3 of these Minchah
types were used in the CONSECRATION offerings
Rashi takes the 3 MINCHAH phrases that occur
in 3 different places in the CONSECRATION
CHAPTERS and indicates the Minchah type (Lv02)
corresponding to each phrase
*2 Our goal here is to ALIGN the phrases in these
verses so as to show which MINCHAH type each
phrase corresponds to. Hence the order of
the verse may not correspond to the order
in the column. (That is, The order in the column
was rearranged to correspond to Lv02 which
lists the definitions of the 5 Minchahs)
*3 The Hebrew root used here is Resh-Chet-Shin
which means to CRAWL. Rashi explains that
a cooked item which is OILY,BOUNCY,& SOFT is
called CRAWLING since it bends and is
flexible. The DEEP FRIED MINCHAH was cooked
in a deep pan so all the oil did not evaporate
and hence the matzah was soaked with oil
giving it a PLUMP BOUNCY texture.
------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES -----------------
*10 It is interesting to see how Rashi ALIGNS the
3 Minchah phrases in each CONSECRATION verse
with the actual minchahs.
Surprisingly Rashi does this by 2 methods which
we can term OBVIOUS and ELIMINATION.
THE OBVIOUS METHOD
------------------
The word FLAT MATZAH occurs in only one Minchah
offering in Lv02 (FLAT MATZAH covered with oil)
Hence those phrases using the word FLAT in
the CONSECRATION chapter must refer to the FLAT
MINCHAH offering
This is an illustration of the OBVIOUS
CORRESPONDENCE method.
For an example of the ELIMINATION method see
note #11
*11 It is interesting to see how Rashi ALIGNS the
3 Minchah phrases in each CONSECRATION verse
with the actual minchahs.
Surprisingly Rashi does this by 2 methods which

For an illustration of OBVIOUS see the
previous note #10
ELIMINATION
-----------
Notice that Ex29-02 uses the two phrases
- OIL MIXED MATZAH BREAD
- MATZAH BREAD
Clearly OIL MIXED MATZAH BREAD in Ex29-02
most naturally corresponds to OIL MIXED MATZAH
BREAD in Lv04.
Since we ELIMINATED oil-mixed-matzah-bread (Ex29)
as referring to oil-mixed-matzah-bread (Lv02)
it follows (by elimination) that MATZAH BREAD
must refer to SOMETHING ELSE
To find out what this something else is, we
review the other phrases used in the CONSECRATION
chapters. OILY BREAD(ex29-23) clearly refers to the
DEEP FRIED MATZAH(Lv02) and hence MATZAH BREAD(Ex29-02)
does also (By elimination).
Here is another way to look at this.
There are 3 phrases describing matzahs in Ex29 and
Lv08.
- Clearly FLAT MATZAHS refers to the FLAT MATZAH
- Clearly OIL MIXED MATZAH BREAD refers to the
OILD MIXED MATZAH BREAD
These are exact or OBVIOUS correspondences.
Having eliminated these two phrases we have left
an item which is described as either MATZAH BREAD
or OILY BREAD. This best corresponds to the
DEEP FRY MINCHAH.
The point here is that 2 processes are used
- OBVIOUS MATCHES
- ELIMINATION
