============= MINCHAH OVERVIEW ===============
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: DOUBLE PARSHAS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: DOUBLE PARSHAS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of DOUBLE PARSHAS simply means
that SEVERAL Biblical paragraphs deal
with the SAME theme.
By comparing both the similarities
and differences in these paragraphs
we are able to discover new patterns
and make inferences.
We emphasize that the resulting inference
is NOT justified because of the 1 or 2 extra
words but rather because of the overall
dynamic force of the multiple paragraph
comparison. This is clearly illustrated
in the example below
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah. The Passover Hagaddah gathers
4 paragraphs dealing with education. Comparison
of these introductory phrases enables us to label
the types of sons in these chapters.
-------------------------------------------------
VERSE TYPE OF SON TEXT OF VERSE
------- ----------- -----------------------------
Ex13-14 SIMPLE SON When your son ASKS a QUESTION
Dt06-20 WISE SON When your son ASKS a QUESTION
Ex12-26 WICKED SON When your son SAYS a QUESTION
Ex13-08 CANT ASK ----------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
For example Ex12-26 speaks about SAYING A QUESTION
vs ASKING A QUESTION. This suggests that this son
is CYNICAL and WICKED.
Similarly Ex13-08 describes an ANSWER WITHOUT A
QUESTION. This suggests that this son CANT ASK
or is APATHETIC.
Notice how it is the comparison that justifies
these conclusions. Without the comparison
I would not know that it is peculiar for
the Bible to state an answer without a
question. This illustrates the Rashi method
of DOUBLE PARSHAS.

examples. We plan to eventually update
this with one compact page.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
In todays example we compare about a dozen
paragraphs all dealing with OFFERINGS. Some
of these offerings mention offering the FAT
OF ANIMALS while some do not. Some of these
FAT OFFERINGS involve the ALYAH FAT while
some do not. The LIST clearly suggests
the laws and patterns that are applicable.
TODAYS LIST
-----------
We list here the 8 MINCHAH (PLEASANT)
offerings mentioned in the Bible.
Each one is assigned a code.
We will then, in the next table, pair these
off against the PLEASANT offerings mentioned
in Lv07-10.
The two lists will enable a term by term
comparison. It will also suggest the
intended meaning by the Bible of certain
terms.

================ Lv07-10 =====================
Here is Lv07-10 which states that the
following types of PLEASANT offerings
are eaten by all priests.
The list shows how each item mentioned
in Lv07-10 is paired against a similar
item in the list of PLEASANT OFFERINGS
above.
Note the word PLEASANT is the English
translation of the Minchah offering

Lv07-10 CROSS REFERENCE CODE
================== ==================== =====
PLEASANT-OVEN Lv02-04:04 B
PLEASANT-POT Lv02-07:13 D
PLEASANT-PAN Lv02-05:06 C
PLEASANT-OIL Lv02-01:03 *1 A*1
PLEASANT-DESOLATE Lv05-15 *2 F,H*1
PLEASANT-DESOLATE Lv05-11:13 *2 F,H*1
NOTES
-----
*1 Rashis point---
-- there are only 4 main types of PLEASANT
OFFERINGS (A,B,C,D). The other 4
PLEASANT OFFERINGS (E,F,G,H) are brought
on SPECIAL EVENTS & OCCASIONS--they
are specific INSTANCES of offerings--
they are not general TYPES.
-- But of these 4 types B,C,D have already
been mentioned while A has not been
mentioned. Hence it seems reasonable to
pair A against the PLEASANT OIL offering
mentioned in Lv02-01:03
-- There is NO PLEASANT offering that is
explicitly called the DESOLATE offering.
But we DO have 2 PLEASANT offerings in the
above list where the BIble explicitly
states
----------------------------------------
Do NOT use OIL in this offering because
it is a SIN offering
----------------------------------------
Thus it is REASONABLE (based on these
verses and the above LIST of cases) to
call these SIN/JEALOSY offerings,
DESOLATE offerings.
Note that the type of logic used here by
Rashi is INDUCTIVE vs DEDUCTIVE.
