Kuph-Tzade has 9 Meanings

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 major functions of Rashi is to provide a Biblical
dictionary -- that is, to list words and all their meanings.

In this module we discuss the root Kuf-Tzade whose fundamental
meaning is END. In todays unit we discuss the meaning DISGUSTING
--literally MY DESIRES HAVE COME TO AND END--I HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

TEXT - Gn03-18a
---------------
...the ground shall give rise for you THORNS (KOTZ)
and thistles

RASHI
-----
Rashi and Radack identify THORNS & CUTTING as 2 of
the 9 meanings of KUPH-TZADE. TO CUT means TO MAKE
AN END (END is the fundamental meaning of KAYTZ)

THE LIST
---------
In the first two units of this module we presented verses
where Kuph-Tzade means DISGUSTED. In this and future issues
we discuss and present verses with other meanings of KAYTZ
Other meanings will be discussed in future issues

Today we present usages of KAYTZ which means TO CUT. Clearly
TO CUT is related to the fundamental meaning of TO END
MEANING Relation to End Verse Sample Text
To cut Make an END Lv14-41d Spill the dust they CUT*1
Thorns They cut Ex22-05b ..fire burns THORNS*2
Thorns THey cut Gn03-18a ..THORNS & thistles*3
COMMENTS
*1 The Radack points out in the name of the Targum
that TO SCRAPE is a more accurate translation than TO CUT
SCRAPE also fits in with the idea of CUTTING ENDS(KAYTZ)

Perhaps then we should translate all KAYTZ as SCRAPE:
Thus e.g. 2King10-32 would be translated as ...
   ------------------------------------------------
THEY SCRAPED (vs CUT) INTO ISRAEL
   ------------------------------------------------
and would denote e.g. terrorist activity.

*2 In light of footnote #1 we would see the etymology of
KAYTZ-THORN not as SOMETHING THAT CUTS but rather
SOMETHING THAT SCRAPES (That is the THORN does not
stab like a knife but SCRAPES the person touching)

*3 Rashi smoothens the verses reading by INSERTING the CAPPED
   Missing phrase:
   ---------------------------------------------------
The earth will give you thorns and thistles
   WHEN YOU PLOUGH
   ---------------------------------------------------
We have elsewhere discussed this Rashi method of smoothing
   out readings by inserting clauses.

Rav Hirsch explains the choice of THORNS and THISTLES.
-- Thorns REPEL & CUT you (Repel)
-- Thistles STICK to YOU (Attract)
These are two extremes; both unwanted
