NOTICE OF CHANGE
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

Effective with Volume 32 Number 12 we have changed the format
of these issues.
- We are still committed to explaining all 7700 Rashis on chumash
- But we are disbanding the "numbered lists" like 210z, 160 etc
- These old lists are still on the website
- They will be replaced by 30 lists covering the whole bible
- The lists will be named not by numbers but concepts
- For example: CONTRADICTION, or REFERENCE, or ALIGNMENT
- These lists will be updated and published from time to time
- They will be available on the web and sent to you
- They will also contain full verse citations
- For example we will have a list with all Rashis based
- ..on REFERENCES to other verses with both verses fully cited
-
- We use to explain the rules every week
- We however now have web versions of the rules
- I am teaching a Rashi class now and will have a new ...
- ..comprehensive quicky version explaining all 30 rules
- ..with really punchy examples
- So we will refer to the explanations of the rules on the web
-
- We are dismantling the LISTS IN ISSUE SUMMARY since...
- We will only have 30 lists on the web

This website is devoted to explaining all 7700 Rashis
on Chumash. We are explaining the Rashis by classifying
them each into one of 30 rules.

EXAMPLE: Ex14-05a NonVerse-spreadsheets
---------------------------------------
Rashi constructs the 7 days from the
time the Jews left Egypt till Egypt
drowned by the sea

-------------------------------------------------
Event Time Source
- ---------------- ---------------- -------------
- Jews leave Egypt Day 1 Passover Nu33-03
- Expected leave Day 3 Passover Ex08-23*1
- No return Day 4 assumption*2
- Pursuit of Egypt Day 7 Ex14-01:05*3
- Death of Egypt Day 7 *4

Notes
-----
*1 The Jews requested a 3 day stay to observe
a holiday to their God in the wilderness

*2 Pharoh had soldiers with the Jews. When they
didnt return on day 3 these soldiers informed
Pharoh of the lack of intent of the Jews to
return

*3 It took the Jews 3 days to go; so it took the
Egyptians 3 days to overtake them. Although the
Jews could have travelled further God ordered
Moses to "turn back" to entice the Egyptians
into pursuing Ex14-01:05

*4 It doesn't say in the Bible that the Egyptians
drowned on the 7th day but the above spreadsheet
suggests it. This is consistent with the fact
that the 7th day of Passover is a Holy day like
the 1st while the intermediate 5 days (days 2-6)
are weekday-holidays.

EXAMPLE: Ex28-43d NonVerse-FillIns
-----------------------------------
Verse Ex28-43d states
-----------------------------------
And they shall be upon Aaron,
and upon his sons, when they go in
unto the tent of meeting, or when they
come near unto the altar to minister
in the holy place;
THAT THEY BEAR NOT INIQUITY AND DIE
it shall be a statute for ever unto
him and unto his seed after him.
-----------------------------------

Rashi makes an inference from the capped words
THAT THEY BEAR NOT INIQUITY AND DIE
----------------------------------------------
We infer that a priest who served in the
temple without the proper garments is liable
to a death penalty at the hands of heaven
----------------------------------------------

Here Rashi makes a LOGICAL INFERENCE from the
verse. We classify such Rashis as NonVerse-FillIn.

EXAMPLE: Ex27-10a NonVerse-Spreadsheets
---------------------------------------
Verses Ex27-09:10a states
---------------------------------
And thou shalt make the court of
the tabernacle: for the south side
southward there shall be hangings
for the court of fine twined linen
a HUNDRED cubits long for one side.
And the pillars thereof shall be
TWENTY, and their sockets twenty,
of brass; the hooks of the pillars
and their fillets shall be of silver.
---------------------------------

Rashi performs some simple
ALGEBRA on the capped words
HUNDRED cubits length and TWENTY pillars
----------------------------------------
100 cubits/20 pillars=5 cubits
This teaches there were 5 cubits
between each pillar
----------------------------------------

EXAMPLE: Ex27-18a NonVerse-Diagrams
-----------------------------------
Verses Ex27-10:18 describing the Temple courtyard
states
--------------------------------------------
[SOUTH]
And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle:
for the south side southward there shall be
hangings for the court of fine
twined linen a hundred cubits long for one side.
...
[NORTH]
And likewise for the north side in length
there shall be hangings a hundred cubits long,
...
[WEST]
And for the breadth of the court on the west side
shall be hangings of fifty cubits:
....
[EAST]
And the breadth of the court
on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits.
....
[WHOLE COURT]
The length of the court shall be a hundred cubits,
and the breadth fifty every where,
and the height five cubits, ....
-----------------------------------------------

We have indicated the structure of the chapter
with the bracketed comments. Rashi constructs
the following diagram

WEST=50
----------------
| |
| |
| |
SOUTH | | NORTH
100 | | 100
Length | | Courtyard Length
----------------
EAST=50
WIDTH

Hence the Rashi comments
------------------------------
LENGTH of the courtyard refers
to the NORTH SOUTH direction
which was 100 cubits
------------------------------

EXAMPLE: Ex26-22b NonVerse-Diagram
-------------------------------------------
Verses Ex26-15:25 describing the construction
of the Tabernacle beams states
-------------------------------------------
And thou shalt make the boards for
the tabernacle of acacia-wood, standing up.

Ten cubits shall be the length of a board,
and a cubit and a half the breadth of each board.
.....
And for the hinder part of the tabernacle
westward thou shalt make six boards.

And two boards shalt thou make for the
corners of the tabernacle in the hinder part.
....
Thus there shall be eight boards, ....
----------------------------------------------

Rashi describes a diagram

WEST SIDE OF TEMPLE

12 outside

EndBoard #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 EndBoard
1 .5 1.5 1.5 1.5 1.5 1.5 1.5 .5 1
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
                             ||||                             ||
10 inside
                             ||||                             ||

                             ||||                             ||

NOTES
-----
*1 (Ex26-16) Each board was 10' long and 1.5 breadth

*2 Rashi assumes they were 1 deep. So we have
10' high 1.5 breadth and 1 deep

*3 (Ex26-22b) There were 6 boards on the west
They are numbered above #1-#6
6 x 1.5 = 9 cubits

*4 (Ex26-23a) There were 2 ENDBOARDS
Each endboard was 1.5 cubits (Ex26-16)

Rashi suggests that 1 cubit covered
the depth of the north/south boards

*5 The remaining 1/2 cubit gave extra width
to the west side

*6 So the total west side = 6*1.5 + 2*.5 =10 inside
So the total west side = 8*1.5 =12 outside
