This website is devoted to explaining all 7700 Rashis
on Chumash. We are explaining the Rashis by classifying
them each into one of 30 rules.

EXAMPLE: Ex26-01a Ex26-14a NonVerse-diagrams
--------------------------------------------
Verses Ex26-01:14 has the following structure
----------------------------------------------
(A) Moreover thou shalt make
the TEMPLE with ten curtains:
....
(B)And thou shalt make curtains of goats'
hair for a TENT over the TEMPLE;
...
(C) And thou shalt make COVERING for the TENT,
with rams' skins dyed red
(D) and a COVERING of SEALSKINS above.
----------------------------------------------
Rashi first explains item (A) and then gives
two opinions on the items (C) (D).
Rashi states
------------------------------------------------------
The Temple consisted of a collection of beams
(Described in Ex26-15:30). On these beams
were hung the CURTAINS described in item (A).
The omitted text in item (A) describes the
material and dimensions of the curtains.
These CURTAINS are called the TEMPLE.
The TEMPLE CURTAINS were made of LINEN woven
with wool of various colors.
On TOP of the TEMPLE was a 2nd set of curtains
protecting the first.
These are described in (B)
above. They are called the TEMPLE TENT and are
made of Goats skin.
One opinion is that there were two more layers
of covering above the tent. So we have as follows
-- Beams
-- TEMPLE of linen Curtains (A)
-- TENT of goat skin curtains (B)
-- COVERING of ram's skins (C)
-- COVERING os seal's skins (D)
However a second opinion is that there was
ONE covering made half of ram's skins and half
of seal's skins so that we have as follows
-- Beams
-- TEMPLE of linen Curtains (A)
-- TENT of goat skin curtains (B)
-- COVERING of ram's and Seal's skins (C,D)
EXAMPLE: Ex26-13d NonVerse-diagram
----------------------------------
Verse Ex26-13
---------------------------------
And the cubit on the one side, and
the cubit on the other side, of that
which remaineth over in the length of
the curtains of the tent, shall hang
on THE BACK of the tabernacle on
this side and on that side, to cover it.
---------------------------------
Rashi interprets the capped word BACK
as referring to the WEST side of the
Temple Here is the diagram
' WEST
' -------------
' | |
' | |
' SOUTH | | NORTH
' | |
' --- ---
' EAST
The fact that the door is on the east is
made explicit in Ex27-13
------------------------------------
And the breadth of the court on the
east side IN FRONT shall be fifty cubits.
------------------------------------
Rashi's reasoning is now clear
--------------------------------
- If the FRONT is on the east
- Then the BACK is on the west

EXAMPLE: Ex14-26a REFERENCE-details
-----------------------------------
Verse Ex14-26a states
------------------------------------
And HaShem said unto Moses:
Stretch out thy hand over the sea,
that the waters may RETURN upon the
Egyptians, upon their chariots,
and upon their horsemen.'
------------------------------------
Rashi clarifies the word RETURN by
citing the cross-reference Ex14-22
-----------------------------------
And the children of Israel went into the
midst of the sea upon the dry ground;
and the waters were a WALL unto them
on their right hand, and on their left.
------------------------------------
Consequently Rashi clarifies
---------------------------------
The waters
- were a WALL
- but RETURNED to the natural state
In the process of RETURNING the waters
buried the Egyptians who relied on
the space created by the wall to protect
them
-----------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex14-19a ALIGNMENT-nuances
----------------------------------
Note the exquisite use of HASHEM vs GOD
in the following Biblical paragraph Ex15-14:25
--------------------------------------------
And HASHEM said unto Moses: 'Wherefore criest
thou unto Me? speak unto the children of Israel,
that they go forward.
And lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thy
hand over the sea, and divide it; and the
children of Israel shall go into the midst of
the sea on dry ground.
And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the
Egyptians, and they shall go in after them; and
I will get Me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all
his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
And the Egyptians shall know that I am HASHEM,
when I have gotten Me honour upon Pharaoh,
upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.'
And the ANGEL OF GOD, who went before the
camp of Israel, removed and went behind them;
and the pillar of cloud removed from before them,
and stood behind them;
and it came between the camp of Egypt and the
camp of Israel; and there was the cloud and
the darkness here, yet gave it light by night
there; and the one came not near the other all
the night.
And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea;
and HASHEM caused the sea to go back by a strong
east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land,
and the waters were divided.
And the children of Israel went into the midst of
the sea upon the dry ground; and the waters were
a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their
left.
And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them
into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses,
his chariots, and his horsemen.
And it came to pass in the morning watch,
that HASHEM looked forth upon the host of the
Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of cloud,
and discomfited the host of the Egyptians.
And He took off their chariot wheels, and made
them to drive heavily; so that the Egyptians said:
Let us flee from the face of Israel;
for HASHEM fighteth for them against the Egyptians.'
----------------------------------------------------
As can be seen the term HASHEM is used in every
verse except Ex14-19a which describes how the
ANGEL OF GOD went between Egypt and the Jews to
save them.
First recall that
- HASHEM connotes God's attribute of mercy
- GOD connotes God's attribute of justice
Consequently, Rashi comments
---------------------------------------
The exodus was an act of mercy--it freed
the Jews from the Egyptians who enslaved them
However at this critical point that the
Egyptians were pursuing them the issue was
not freeing the Jews but saving them...that
is saving the Jews by killing the pursuing
Egyptians. To save one people by killing
another people required justice not mercy.
Hence the word HASHEM was changed to GOD
