NOTICE OF CHANGE
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

Effective with Volume 32 Number 12 we have changed the format
of these issues.
- We are still committed to explaining all 7700 Rashis on chumash
- But we are disbanding the "numbered lists" like 210z, 160 etc
- These old lists are still on the website
- They will be replaced by 30 lists covering the whole bible
- The lists will be named not by numbers but concepts
- For example: CONTRADICTION, or REFERENCE, or ALIGNMENT
- These lists will be updated and published from time to time
- They will be available on the web and sent to you
- They will also contain full verse citations
- For example we will have a list with all Rashis based
- ..on REFERENCES to other verses with both verses fully cited
-
- We use to explain the rules every week
- We however now have web versions of the rules
- I am teaching a Rashi class now and will have a new ...
- ..comprehensive quicky version explaining all 30 rules
- ..with really punchy examples
- So we will refer to the explanations of the rules on the web
-
- We are dismantling the LISTS IN ISSUE SUMMARY since...
- We will only have 30 lists on the web

This website is devoted to explaining all 7700 Rashis
on Chumash. We are explaining the Rashis by classifying
them each into one of 30 rules.

A new short but lively guide will soon appear.

EXAMPLE: Ex25-22b CONTRADICTION-2aspects
----------------------------------------
Note the CONTRADICTION in the following
two verses
Verse Ex25-22 states
--------------------------------------
And there I will meet with thee,
and I will speak with thee from above
the ark-cover, FROM BETWEEN THE TWO KERUBIM
which are upon the ark of the testimony,
of all things which I will give thee in
commandment unto the children of Israel.
--------------------------------------

Verse Lv01-01 states
--------------------------------------
THE HaShem called unto Moses,
and spoke unto him out of the
TEMPLE TENT saying:
--------------------------------------

We see the contradiction. Which is it?
Did God speak to Moses from the whole
temple or only from between the Kerubim.

Rashi resolves this contradiction thru
the 2aspects method of resolution

- MOSES stood at the temple door the place
from which he heard God
- GOD spoke from the KERUBIM

So Rashi distinguishes between the SPEAKER
and SPOKEN TO; each of the above verses
deals with one aspect. Rashis resolution
is further embodied in an explicit verse

Nu07-89
---------------------------------------
And when Moses went into the TENT OF MEETING
that He might speak with him, then he heard
the VOICE speaking unto him from above
the ark-cover that was upon the ark of
the testimony, FROM BETWEEN THE TWO KERUBIM;
and He spoke unto him.
---------------------------------------

EXAMPLE: Ex13-13a ALIGNMENT-2cases
--------------------------------------
Note the ALIGNED discussion of redemption
of firstborn non-kosher animals in the
following two verse sets

Verse Nu18-15:16 states
---------------------------------------
Every thing that openeth the womb,
of all flesh which they offer unto HaShem,
both of man and beast, shall be thine;
howbeit the first-born of man shalt thou
surely redeem, and

the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem.
And their redemption-MONEY--from a month old
shalt thou redeem them--shall be,
according to thy valuation, FIVE shekels of silver,
after the shekel of the sanctuary--
the same is twenty gerahs.
---------------------------------------

But Verse Ex13-13 states
----------------------------------------
And every firstling of an ASS thou shalt redeem
with a LAMB; and if thou wilt not redeem it,
then thou shalt break its neck;
and all the first-born of man among thy sons
shalt thou redeem.
----------------------------------------

Rashi comments on the ALIGNED capped words
----------------------------------------
- Firstborn asses are redeemed via lambs
- Firstborn other non-kosher animals are
redeemed monetarily
----------------------------------------

Rashi further gives moral reasons why
asses were redeemed thru lambs
-------------------------------------
The asses helped the Jews when they
left Egypt since the Jews left Egypt
laden with gold and silver and donkeys
are the traditional animal by which
people take loads. Consequently these
donkeys were rewarded that they are redeemed
thru lambs while other non-kosher animals
are redeemed monetarily.
--------------------------------------

EXAMPLE: Ex15-07a FORMAT-climax
---------------------------------------
Rashi sees the progression in Ex15-06:07
as illustration sequence and CLIMAX.

We have indicated Rashi's comments below
in BRACKETS.

----------------------------------
[Stage 1a: ENEMIES-CRUBMLE]
Thy right hand, O HaShem, glorious in power,
Thy right hand, O HaShem, CRUBMLETH in pieces the ENEMY.

[STAGE 1b: RISE UP/REBELLION-TUMBLE them]
And in the greatness of Thine GRANDEUR
Thou TUMBLEST them that rise up/rebel against Thee;

[STAGE 2: DESTRUCTION]
Thou sendest forth Thy wrath,
it consumeth them as stubble.
----------------------------------

Here Rashi sees God as
- Using his HAND against ENEMIES
- Using his GRANDEUR against REBELLION

- Stage 1, crumbles/tumbles the enemy
However this would allow them to rebuild
If they repent fine and if not

- Stage 2: God loses His temper and
consumes them like stubble (Total
destruction)

EXAMPLE: Ex15-01c GRAMMAR-miscellaneous(plurality)
--------------------------------------------------
Verse Ex15-01c states
------------------------------------------
Then sang Moses and the children of Israel
this song unto HaShem, and spoke, saying:
I wish to sing unto HaShem, for He is highly exalted;
the horse and his rider ROSE into the sea.
------------------------------------------

Note: It is difficult to understand this Rashi
without the corresponding English.
- horse and rider is a PLURAL subject
- ROSE is a single predicate
So Rashi must explain use of the SINGLE
predicate with the PLURAL subject

Rashi
-----------------------------------
The horse and rider remained together
as one unit; first the sea shot them upwards
and they fell together (still together) towards
the sea bottom where they drowned (together)
-----------------------------------

Rashi solves the singular-plural problem
by treating horse-chariot as one unit.

There is a humorous point to Rashi. The Egypytians
prided themselves on their animals. The prided
themselves on their military might. So Rashi
describes them as clinging to their fantasies
to the very end and even going down to the depths
(symbolic of hell) with them.

Curiously, Egyptians get buried with their precious
belongings. It is therefore almost as if God were
mocking at them and burying them with their army
so could have it when they get resurrected.

EXAMPLE: Ex13-14b DATABASE-patterns
-----------------------------------
We ask the following query: In How many
verses do we find commandments of parents
to educate their children concerning the exodus.

We find 4 verses each with certain characteristics
The 4 verses are as follows

-------------------------------------------------------
Verse Child Text of verse
---------- --------- ---------------------------------
Ex12-25:28 CYNICAL Child SAYS question
Ex13-01:10 APATHETIC no question is asked
Ex13-14:16 SIMPLE Child ASKS "what is this"
Dt06-20:25 WISE Child ASKS "What are laws, symbols
