This website is devoted to explaining all 7700 Rashis
on Chumash. We are explaining the Rashis by classifying
them each into one of 30 rules.

EXAMPLE: Ex26-24b MEANING-FiguresOfSpeech(FFF)
----------------------------------------------
Ex26-24b states
-----------------------------------------------
And they shall be TWINNED beneath,
and in like manner they shall be
complete unto the top thereof
unto the first ring; thus shall it be
for them both; they shall be for the two corners.
-----------------------------------------------
Rashi explains the capped word TWINNED
--------------------------------------------
TWINNED means IDENTICAL APPEARANCE
--------------------------------------------
Here Rashi extends the meaning of TWINNED
which normally refers to two identical
children as referring to any two objects
that look identical. That is, Rashi names
by FORM/APPEARANCE.
EXAMPLE: Ex13-02a MEANING-FiguresOfSpeech(Metonomy)
---------------------------------------------------
Ex13-02a states
-----------------------------------------
Sanctify unto Me all the first-born,
whatsoever LETS OUT OF THE WOMB among the
children of Israel, both of man and of beast,
it is Mine.'
-----------------------------------------
Rashi explains the capped phrase
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
LETS OUT OF THE WOMB
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
as meaning
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
THE FIRST TO LET OUT OF THE WOMB
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Here Rashi uses METONOMY, naming
by RELATION--the FIRST BORN is
known for LETTING OUT OF THE WOMB
The mother doesn't yet know the
pain of childbirth until the firstborn.
By the second child the mother is
prepared for the event.
Note: The METONOMY is not strictly
logical since e.g. all children
LET OUT OF THE WOMB. However the
firstborn is KNOWN for it since the
firstborn introduces the mother to
the experience of childbirth.
EXAMPLE: Ex15-08c MEANING-homographs
--------------------------------------
Ex15-08 states
-----------------------------------
And with the blast of Thy nostrils
the waters were piled up--the floods
uprighted like a LEAKING WATER PILLAR; the deeps
were congealed in the heart of the sea.
-----------------------------------
Rashi paraphrased deals with the multiple
meanings of the root NUN-DALETH ND. This
innocent root has 5 delightful meanings
- To Wander
- lip murmurs
- menstruant
- traveller-jug of water
- water-pillar
In this list we traditionally explain the
multiple meanings of one Biblical root
as having a unified underlying meaning
The unified underlying meaning of the
root NUN-DALETH is
----------------------------
many small minute movements
----------------------------
Hence we have
- To Wander
Clear WANDERERS make many small minute
movements since they wander and change
directions
- lip murmurs
A MURMUR is precisely many small movements
- traveller-jug of water
a) We could say these are jugs of WANDERERS
b) Alternatively such jugs leak and the water
leaks constitute small minute movements
- water-pillar
Water pillars are characterized by continuous
sprays, small minute movements of water
- menstruant
The flows/leaks of blood constitute the
small minute movements
Note: Rashi notes a difference between
- Nun Aleph Daleth - Water PILLARS
- Nun Daleth-------- wanderer JUGS
However the fundamental metaphor is a
simulataneous
- collection
- with many small leaks

EXAMPLE: Ex27-10c MEANING-FiguresOfSpeech(FFF)
----------------------------------------------
Ex27-10c states
-----------------------------------------
And the pillars thereof shall be twenty,
and their sockets twenty, of brass;
the HOOKS of the pillars and their fillets
shall be of silver.
-----------------------------------------
Rashi explains that the Hebrew root VAV-VAV
means HOOK.
Here Rashi uses naming by FUNCTION-FORM-FEEL
since the grammatical FUNCTION of the VAV is
to indicate CONNECTION (The letter VAV means
AND,OR etc). Hence it would be appropriate
to name the CURTAIN HOOK by the VAV since
its purpose is CONNECTION.
