SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
The FORMATTING rule seeks to explain Rashis based on
the FORMATTING of the Biblical text. FORMATTING techniques
in modern writing include use of bold, italics, underline,
bullets, paragraph indentation and similar items. The Bible
indicated FORMATTING using its own techniques: For example
- the Bible indicates bold, italics, underline thru REPETITION
- the Bible indicates bulleting, thru REPEATING KEYWORDS
The Bible can also indicate FORMATTING thru meaning without
any formal structure.

EXAMPLE Dt13-14b Dt13-14c
-------------------------
Dt13-13:14 states
--------------------------------------------
If you shall hear say in one of your cities,
which the Lord your God has given you to live there, saying,
- Certain MEN, SONS OF ROWDINESS,
- have gone out FROM AMONG YOU, and seduced THEIR CITY, saying,
Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known;
-----------------------------------------------------

Notice the CAPPED REPEATED phrases. Hence the 2 Rashi comments
--------------------------------------------------------------
The repetition MEN/SONS indicates EMPHASIS---the law only applies
if MALES seduce their city, not if FEMALES seduce their city

The repetition, FROM AMONG YOU/THEIR CITY indicates emphasis---
the law only applies when the seduction (to observe idols)
came from a LOCAL INHABITANT (Different laws apply if an
outsider seduced the city)
---------------------------------------------------------------

EXAMPLE: Dt12-16a Dt12-24a Dt12-25a
------------------------------------
A similar law applies to the PROHIBTION of CONSUMING BLOOD
which occurs five times in the Bible. Rashi infers emphasis
from each of the five times. We cite below the five
occurrences as well as the surrounding verses which indicate
context
---------------------------------------------------------
(#1) Dt12-15:16 states
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
However you may slaughter animals and eat their meat
in all your gates, to your heart’s desire,
according to the blessing of the Lord,
your God which he has given you; the unclean
and the clean may eat of it, as they do
of the gazelle and the deer.
Only you shall NOT EAT THE BLOOD;
you shall POUR IT ON THE EARTH LIKE WATER
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

(#2,3) Dt12-21:26
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
If the place which the Lord your God has chosen
to put his name there is too far from you,
then you shall kill of your herd and ...
you shall eat in your gates, to your heart’s desire.
- ....Only be sure NOT TO EAT THE BLOOD;
FOR THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE...
- YOU SHALL NOT EAT IT; you shall POUR it upon the earth as water.
- YOU SHALL NOT EAT IT; that it may go well with you,...
Only your holy things ....you shall take, and go to
the place which the Lord shall choose.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

(#4) Lv03-13:17 states
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it,
and kill it before the Tent of Meeting;
and the sons of Aaron shall SPRINKLE ITS BLOOD upon the altar around.
And he shall offer there his offering, ...
It shall be an everlasting statute for your generations
throughout all your dwellings, that you eat neither fat NOR BLOOD.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

(#5) Lv07-25:26 states
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
For whoever eats the fat of the beast,
of which men OFFER AN OFFERING made by fire to the Lord,
the soul who eats it shall be cut off from his people.
Moreover YOU SHALL EAT NO KIND OF BLOOD, ....IN ALL YOUR
DWELLING PLACES
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

(#6) Lv17-11:14 states
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And whoever ...
who eats any kind of blood;
I will ... cut him off from among his people.
FOR THE LIFE OF THE FLESH IS IN THE BLOOD;
and I have given it to you upon the ALTAR
to make an ATONEMENT ....;
Therefore ...NO SOUL SHALL EAT BLOOD...

And whoever ... hunts and catches any beast ...
he shall POUR OUT ITS BLOOD, AND COVER IT WITH DUST
.... therefore I said to the people of Israel,
YOU SHALL NOT EAT THE BLOOD....

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
--------------------------------------------------------------
To properly understand Rashi's treatment of these repetitions
we must rearrange the verses
- #6 clearly states
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
FOR THE LIFE OF THE FLESH IS IN THE BLOOD
...I HAVE GIVEN IT AS AN ATONEMENT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- (#4) Hence the major prohibition of eating OFFERING BLOOD
the BLOOD THAT GUSHES OUT DURING SLAUGHTER AND
SYMBOLIZES THE LIFE FORCE. The Torah prohibited
descecration of the symbol

But I would think that other NON OFFERING or NON GUSHING
blood would not be prohibited (Since it doesnt fully
symbolize LIFE FORCE). Hence

- (#1,7) The PROHIBITION of eating NON OFFERING meat
in ANY DWELLING PLACE (Even outside Israel)

- (#6) The PROHIBITION of eating BLOOD even when
COVERING it with dust (Non-gushing blood)

- (#2,#3) speaks about the TEMPTATION TO EAT BLOOD
WHILE EATING AT YOUR DINNER TABLE. Hence the prohibition
- of eating BLOOD IN ORGANS (Which has not yet gone out)
- of eating DRAINING BLOOD (Which does not GUSH OUT)
-------------------------------------------------------

In interpreting this Rashi we
- have NOT played a number game--we have not said that
the verse is repeated 5 times so we will find 5 prohibitions

- have emphasized CONTENT---each REPETITION is associated
with something unique that we wouldnt expect to be
prohibited and hence the emphasis.

LIST160z below presents other examples where verses are
interpreted restrictively because of a REPETITION.

Gn27-03c HUNT me a HUNT HUNT from wilds*1
COMMENTS
*1 That is a REAL HUNT (HUNT A HUNT) and eg not buying
meat if he couldnt immediately find it in the hunt.

*2 THere are two Rashi comments (Nu35-34a, Nu35-34b)
- From the repetition DWELL DWELL Rashi infers that
God always DWELLS among the Jews
- Rashi then explains the verse
-----------------------------------------------
Since I always DWELL among the Jews do not cover
up murder so that I am not forced to dwell in
impurity
-----------------------------------------------

*3 Lv17-11:14 emphasizes
--------------------------------------------------
The BLOOD IS (That is symbolizes) THE SOUL
--------------------------------------------------
Hence I would have thought that only
GUSHING OFFERING BLOOD that comes from SLAUGHTER is
prohibited since it symbolizes the LIFE FORCE.
The various other verses emphasize
that NON GUSHING or NON OFFERING blood also
are prohibited.

*4 The verses speak about AVOIDING THE TEMPTATION OF
EATING BLOOD while eating PERSONAL MEALS--presumably
- this refers to BLOOD STILL IN THE ORGANS
- BLOOD THAT IS DRAINED
Even though this is NON GUSHING blood and doesnt
strongly symbolize the SOUL it is still prohibited

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of
meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning.
We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING.

Rashi had 10 vehicles by which he explained meaning.

Rashi explains the meaning of a 4 letter root as
the sum of the meaning of its constituent two two-letter
components. When Rashi explains
the meaning of a three letter root using the two
letter subroot we refer to this as the submethod
of 2-4 LETTER ROOTS. We have explained elsewhere
that Rashi simultaneously believed in
- use of 3 letter roots for purposes of conjugation
- use of 2 letter roots for purposes of meaning

EXAMPLE: Dt13-14a BL-&L (Beth Lamed Yud Ayin Lamed)
---------------------------------------------------
Very roughly the FOUR LETTER HEBREW ROOT,
BETH LAMED YUD AYIN LAMED, means any of the following
- wicked, rowdy, undisciplined,
The constituent two 2-letter roots mean as follows
- BETH LAMED means WITHOUT (Bli)
- AYIN LAMED means YOKE
Together the two two letter roots would say WITHOUT YOKE
Thus we have the suggestion that
WITHOUT YOKE = wicked, rowdy, undisciplined.
This seems very reasonable.

LIST910h below presents several examples of 4 letter
roots. Analyzed in this manner.

COMMENTS
*1 There are two approaches to 4 letter roots. Sometimes we
try and see them as 2 two letter roots and sometimes we try
and see them as a 3 letter root with an extra letter. Thus
ASTR is explained in the Talmud as ASR. Rav Hirsch stuck to
the 3 letter approach even in obvious cases--thus he takes
MMZR from MZR a rare word in Job.

Similarly Rashi cites a controversy on AVRAYCH:
-- A double 2 letter approach would yield:
AVRAYCH=Gentle(Rc) Father(Av)
-- A 3 letter approach would yield:
AVRAYCH=Kneel (Brch) to me (Aleph)

*2 Note the poetic lisence in e.g.
SRAF = BIRD(AF) POT (SiR)= Something for Bird nests
This type of small poetic lisence is common in etymologies
and makes their study difficult

*3 Note the finer nuances in some translations. For example ZLAF
occurs rarely in TNACH and its meaning is inferred from its
context. The RDQ in his book of ROOTS says its meaning is SOME
TYPE OF FRIGHT....this could go well with the verse cited by
RDK: "fright has overtaken me"

But perhaps a BETTER translation is
feeling worthless and tired So that the verse with
ZLAF would mean WORTHLESSNESS & FATIGUE HAS OVERTAKEN ME
Then again perhaps there is no way to see which translation
is better

*4 Rashi Gn41-43b

*5 Rashi Gn41-45

*6 Rashi Gn49-12a

*7 The following may help:
- PRCh means to FLY; in connection with fish it could
refer to swimming throughout the water

- SN can mean THORNBUSH or BRANCHES (Songs07-09). I
therefore suggest it means SHRUB like.

So SN-PR would refer to SHRUB-LIKE(SN) protrusions by
which a fish FLYES (PR) - SNPR.

*8 Rashi Nu13-16a

*9 The reference is to a bird with a DOUBLE CROP. Since DU in
ARAMAIC means TWO it appears that Rashi is saying
-------------------------------------------------
DuChiFath = Double(DU) Handle(Caph)=Double CRop
-------------------------------------------------

However we think it preferable that Rashi used Hebrew roots
to explain Hebrew words(Provided simple exaplanations exist)
Hence we read Rashi as saying
--------------------------------------
DuChiFath = ENOUGH (Dai) Handles(CAPH)
--------------------------------------

Thus the word does not DIRECTLY mean DOUBLE CROP. Rather
the essential meaning of the word is ENOUGH HANDLES. The
method by which this particular bird implements this
ENOUGHNESS is thru use of the DOUBLE CROP.

*10 Rashi Gn02-14a Chid-Kel are the SHARP-LIGHT cold river
rapids.

*11 (In fact there is species of flies in Africa that
stings people to death...they start by blinding
them (so that they cant see where to go))

*12 The word CRML can equally refer to
- a ripe pod of barley (Lv02-14f)
- a meadow in full bloom (Is32-15)

This double meaning is consistent with the meanings of
Caph-Resh (KR) presented in LIST813d. Caph-Resh can
equally refer to a
- a FERTILE VALLEY
- anything with a PLUMP Shape(Like a budded barley stalk)

*13
Cheth-Resh-Tet-Mem means
the BURNT and UNCLEAN--that is, the DEAD.

The Egyptian Magicians are called XRTM
because they aroused their imaginations
by dwelling in graveyards and morgues.
