VERSE: Dt23-20a

LEND/LOAN on INTEREST

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Torah coins the term BITE to refer to INTEREST on a loan.
It is Biblically prohibited to have interests on loans. The
Torah uses 2 verb forms--
-- NOUN FORM: Dont give BITES
-- ACTIVE (to bite) and
-- CAUSATIVE (to make someone else bite you).
Clearly
--TO BITE refers to the PERSON LENDING taking INTEREST
--To give BITES also refers to the PERSON LENDING taking interest
--To CAUSE/ALLOW A BITE refers to the LENDER paying the interest

SEARCH QUERY

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Biblical grammar
the same way modern Grammar books explain Grammar.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We review and contrast verses with the root Nun-SHin-Caph
We see 3 forms
- NOUN Form (Give a BITE)
- ACTIVE TENSE (To BITE a lender)
- CAUSATIVE TENSE (Make someone take a BITE (from you))
VERSEFORMTEXT OF VERSE
Ex22-24NOUNWhen you loan dont give BITES*1
Lv25-36NOUNWhen helping the poor dont take BITES*1
Ez18-37NOUNHe did not take BITES or EXTRA (Interest)*1
Dt23-20CAUSATIVEDont CAUSE TO your brother BITINGS*2
Dt23-20ACTIVE...anything that can be BITEN*3
COMMENTS

*1 Clearly these verses refer to BITES of the LOANING PERSON
   on the LENDER

*2 So we translate this as DONT ALLOW YOUR BROTHER TO BITE
YOU (That is, do NOT pay the interest to him as he then
   has committed a Bite).

   - Thus Dt23-20 prohibits interest on the lender
   - WHile Lv25-36 prohibits interest on the loaning party

*3 BITEN by the LOANING PARTY

OTHER VERSES: FURTHER DETAILS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt22-18a and Dt21-18c refer to DISCIPLINING criminal acts.
Thus Dt22-18a discusses disciplining someone who slandered
his wife. Dt21-18c refers to DISCIPLINING a rebellious son
who steals from his parents. We learn the meaning of this
non-specific term DISCIPLINING from an OTHER VERSE Dt25-01:04
which prescribes LASHES as a disciplinary action.
Similarly from Prov23-20 we infer that this rebellious son
is involved with drunkards and meat gorgers. Similarly we
infer from Dt17-06 that death penalties require 2 witnesses
Throughout Rashi uses the technique of OTHER VERSES.

---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE

One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
FURTHER details.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah

Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------

FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46.

EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading the Rashi try reading
Gn46 yourself and see if you can
discover the further details.

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi cites Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------

Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
the FEW PEOPLE that went down to
Egypt refers to SEVENTY people

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then you
can present the verse in the first column
(eg Dt26-05) and the CHAPTER (but not the verse)
in the 3rd column---e.g. Gn46.

The student is then instructed to discover
the further details. The students solution
can then be compared with Rashis.

COMMENTS

*1 First some background: There were 3 camps
-- There was the TEMPLE which had the highest holiness
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF LEVITES (Nu02-17)
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF TRIBES (Nu02)
These camps surrounded each others like concentric
squares (The Temple in the center, the Levites
surrounding them, the tribes surrounding the Levites)

Nu05-02 states that ALL IMPURE PEOPLE should be expelled
from the camp without specifying which one.Rashi-is-Simple
  - Lv13-46 states that the LEPOR should be ISOLATED. Hence
he is expelled from ALL 3 camps

  - Ex13-19 states that Moses took the bones of Joseph with
him. But Moses was a Levite and dwelled among the
Levites. Hence we infer that someone who is impure
because of contact with the dead may stay in the LEVITE
camp but may not stay in the TEMPLE CAMP.

  - We find no permission for the Zav to be in the Levite
camp and we do have a requirement for the Lepor to
be isolated. Hence we infer that the Zav may dwell in
the Israelite camp (so as to leave the lepor ALONE)
but may not dwell in the Temple or Levite camp.

The Talmud (Pesachim 67) goes into further details and
alternative derivations but the above captures the
flavor of the argument which is based on other verses.

RACHAYIM=Grinder;RECEV=Top Stone

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis tasks is to explain the meaning of words the
same way a dictionary does. One method of explaining words
is to distinguish the meaning of synonyms. Dt24-06 refers
to RAYCHAYIM and RECEV. There are 4 other verses with the
word RAYCHAYIM--they refer to GRINDING FLOUR--hence we infer
that RAYCHAYIM is a GRINDING set. This is an inference based
on SIMILAR verses with that word. The Hebrew root RECEV means
to RIDE. If we combine RIDE with GRINDSTONES we could suggest
that RECEV refers to the TOP grindstone(That rides on the
bottom one).We use here the method of ROOT MEANING.

------------------------------------------------------
RASHI RULE USED: WORD MEANINGS
RASHI SUBRULE USED: METHODS OF INFERENCE
------------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
In inferring meaning Rashi uses about a dozen techniques
They include Looking up similar verses, reviewing meanings
of roots, seeking expert advice, etc. These methods allow
us to infer meanings of new unknown words

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We list all verses where RAYCHAYIM occurs. This allows
inference from OTHER VERSES. THe meaning of RECEV is inferred
from the ROOT.
VERSETEXT OF VERSE WITH GRINDER

Jer25-10the sound of GRINDERS*3
Ex11-05The bondmaid who hangs out by the GRINDER*4
Dt24-06dont take as surety GRINDSTONES or RIDERS*5
COMMENTS

*1 This verse explicitly states that RAYCHAYIM is used to
   GRIND FLOWER

*2 This verse explicitly states that RAYCHAYIM is used to
   GRIND SEEDS

*3 This verse explicitly states that RAYCHAYIM is
   connected with NOISY work

*4 This verse describes the RAYCHAYIM as a menial task
   performed by maids

*5 Since the ROOT RECEV means to RIDE it seems reasonable
to interpret RECEV as the TOP GRINDSTONE that RIDES
   on the BOTTOM GRINDSTONE.

The word RACHAYIM would then either refer to the
whole set of GRINDSTONES or more specifically to the
   BOTTOM ONE.

GENERALIZATION

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt24-06c prohibits, when making a loan, taking as
collateral GRINDSTONES. The Rabbi Ishmael Style rules
require us to GENERALIZE this EXAMPLE--not only is it
forbidden to take as COLLATERAL grindstones, but it is
also prohibited to take as COLLATERAL any UTENSIL used
in food production. This inference is based on the
Rabbi Ishmael rule of GENERALIZATION.

------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: THE RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE RULES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: GENERALIZATION
------------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
Some Rashis deal with GRAMMAR or MEANING. But other Rashis
deal with STYLE. The Great Talmudic Sage Rabbi Ishmael,
laid down 3 style rule classes which divide into a dozen
or so rules.

Today we deal with the GENERALIZATION style. This
style applies to ANY SIMPLY STATED SENTENCE.

The Rabbi Ishmael Style rules then demand that the verse
be interpreted BROADLY as applying to ANY SIMILAR CASE.
This requirement of BROAD interpretation is not because
of grammar or meaning or even because some word in the
verse is extra: Rather, it is a requirement of style.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The simplest example I could find occurs at Dt25-04
---------------------
Dont MUZZLE
an OX
while it is THRESHING
----------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES:
-----------------
-- Suppose you didnt want to interpert the verse BROADLY?
How could you interpret the verse STRICTLY? (The answer to
this question facilitates understanding what not to do)

-- How would you apply the Rabbi Ishmael requirement
of BROAD INTERPRETATION to Dt25-04. More specifically
attempt to generalize each CAPPED WORD.

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
-- If I interpreted the verse STRICTLY then it would
ONLY be prohibited to MUZZLE an OX while it is
THRESHING

-- The BROAD interpretation prohibits
---- Not just MUZZLING but ANY inteference with eating
---- not just to an OX but to ANY working animal
---- not just while THRESHING but while doing ANY animal work

STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE

You can also revu the whole Rabbi Ishmael style
series at http://www.RashiYomi.com/ishmael.htm

Finally you can visit the Daily Rashi calendar at
http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm The Rabbi Ishmael
series occured during August and September 2000.

Finally we cite Rashi on Pesachim Folio 6 who explicitly
states that ALL simply stated Biblical verses should
be GENERALIZED.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the verses with
the BROAD-GENERALIZATION style
and ask the students to perform the
2 student exercises listed above.

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS LIST
--------------
Please find below examples of verses in the GENERALIZATOIN
form taken from http://www.Rashiyomi.com/example3.htm.
The GENERAL term is CAPPED in the 2nd column---the BROAD
INTERPRETATION of this general term is presented in the
3rd column. The new example today is presented on bottom.

COMMENTS

*1 The verse states
   -----------------------------------------------------------
if you find a diseased animal in the FIELD it is not Kosher
   -----------------------------------------------------------

   We generalize this as follows
   -----------------------------------------------------------
If you find a diseased animal ANY PLACE it is not Kosher
   -----------------------------------------------------------

We can view this as a GENERALIZATION. We can also view this
   as
   -------------------------------------------------------
The Torah uses common frequent examples to illustrate laws
without necessarily making the law more restrictive
   -------------------------------------------------------

Thus in this case MOST diseased animals are found in the
field but the law applies any place.

*2 The full verse states
   ----------------------------------------------------------
If a man rape an engaged woman in a city they are both put
to death--the man because he committed adultery and the
woman because she could have screamed/protested but didnt
   ----------------------------------------------------------

Again...cities are TYPICAL places where SCREAMS of rapists
would not go unnoticed. But the law applys any place.

*3 The actual verse states
   -------------------------------
dont work with 1st born oxen
   dont share 1st born sheep
   -------------------------------

But this prohibition generalizes to prohibit
   WORKING with any first born
   and SHARING any 1st born.

Again the Bible simply took typical examples.

*4 As indicated above we generalize 3 things
   - ANY ANIMAL (not just ox)
   - ANY INTEFERENCE with eating (not just muzzling)
   - WHILE DOING ITS TYPICAL ANIMAL WORK(Not just threshing)

*5 This is consistent with the end of the verse
   --------------------------------------------------
   dont take grindstones as collateral
BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING THE SOUL AS COLLATERAL
   --------------------------------------------------

In other words since the utensils help in preparation
of food it is as if you are taking the persons life as
   collateral.

As can be seen from the list the main derivation is
from the fact of generalization and independent of
   extra phrases.
