GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we switch gears. Prior to this unit we have
been focusing on the grammatical conjugation of verbs. We
now move on to other grammatical areas. Today we review
the construct state.

REFERENCE:

Todays unit comes from the following postings

THE CONSTRUCT STATE

EXAMPLE 74: Dt04-41c At the EAST OF THE SUN (Place of sunrise)
EXAMPLE 75: Dt32-13h oil oozed from the STRENGTH OF THE ROCK
EXAMPLE 76: Dt32-14f the MILK OF SHEEP

BACKGROUND
-----------
Recall that every noun can acquire an adjective by use of
the construct state. For example: BALL is a noun while
THE BALL OF JOHN refers to Johns ball (OF JOHN modifies
the ball and tells you WHOS ball it was)

THE TEXT AND RASHI
------------------
The difference between the SPELLING of a NOUN and its
construct state is usually very minor. For example
the noun MILK is spelled CHOLOV in Hebrew with two
KAMATZ while its construct state is spelled CHALAYV
with a CHATAF PATACH AND TZARAY.

REFERENCE:
----------
A partial list of NOUNS and their CONSTRUCT states
may be found in the IBN SHOSHAN Dictionary volume
5 in the appendix. However all the forms reported
by Rashi in todays posting do not appear there since
they are rare forms (Rashi, as we have seen traditionally
reports rare forms).

THE LIST
--------
The list below presents 3 Rashis whose sole purpose
is to distinguish between nouns and their construct states.
To facilitate understanding we have added verses with the
noun form and construct form so the reader can contrast them.
WORD MEANING VERSE CONSTRUCT MEANING VERSE
Chalav Milk Lv20-24 Chalayv Milk of Dt32-14f
Chalamish Strong Dt08-15 Chalmish strength of Dt32-13h
MizRAcha East Ex27-13 Mizrecha East of Dt04-41c
