GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we switch gears. Prior to this unit we have
been focusing on the grammatical conjugation of verbs. We
now move on to other grammatical areas. Today we review
examples where a rearrangement of a sentence makes it sound
better.

REARRANGEMENT OF Ex02-05

EXAMPLE 61: Ex02-05a Rearranged verses can sound better

THE TEXT
--------
And Pharohs daughter went down, TO BATHE ON THE NILE

THE CONFUSION
-------------
It sounds as if she bathed in broad daylight

THE RASHI
---------
By rearranging the verse the meaning becomes clearer
SHE WENT DOWN TO THE NILE, TO BATHE

THE LIST
--------
The list below shows the ORIGINAL & REARRANGED verse.
The capped words indicate where the rearrangement takes
place
ORIGINAL VERSE REARRANGED VERSE
She went
REARRANGEMENT OF Nu19-07

EXAMPLE 62: Nu19-07b Rearranged verses can sound better

THE TEXT
--------
He will wash, return to the camp and BE UNCLEAN TILL EVE

THE CONFUSION
-------------
It sounds as if he can return to camp BEFORE EVE while still
impure--it sounds as if he can return right after washing

THE RASHI
---------
By rearranging the verse the meaning becomes clearer
--------------------------------------------------------
He will wash, BE UNCLEAN TILL EVE and then return to the camp
--------------------------------------------------------

THE LIST
--------
The list below shows the ORIGINAL & REARRANGED verse.
The capped words indicate where the rearrangement takes
ORIGINAL VERSE REARRANGED VERSE
He will wash his clothes He will wash his clothes
REARRANGEMENT OF Dt04-38a

EXAMPLE 63: Dt04-38a Rearranged verses can sound better

THE TEXT
--------
To conquer nations mightier than you THAN YOUR FACE

THE CONFUSION
-------------
In this example the capped phrase THAN YOUR FACE does
not make sense

THE RASHI
---------
By rearranging the verse the meaning becomes clearer:
-----------------------------------------------------
To conquer FROM BEFORE YOU (lit. FROM BEFORE YOUR FACE)
nations mightier than you *1
-----------------------------------------------------

THE LIST
--------
The list below shows the ORIGINAL & REARRANGED verse.
The capped words indicate where the rearrangement takes
place
ORIGINAL VERSE REARRANGED VERSE
To help you conquer To help you conquer
FROM BEFORE YOU (FROM YOUR FACE*1)
nations that are nations that are
greater & mightier greater & mightier
than you than you
THAN YOUR FACE*1
COMMENTS
*1 The prefix MEM in Hebrew can mean both
   --- THAN
   --- FROM

The verse already includes a MEM that means THAN
  ------------------------------
  nations mightier THAN(MEM) you
  -------------------------------

It would therefore seem logical to interpret the
second MEM as also meaning THAN. But this leads
  to the following meaningless interpretation
   ---------------------------------------
   Nations mightier THAN your face
   ---------------------------------------

By rearranging the verse we discover that the 2nd MEM
means FROM. (Conquer FROM(MEM) before your face).

Thus in this case the rearrangement removed confusion
  by reinterpreting a prefix
