VERSE: Gn49-12a

RULE: To introduce this rule consider the Hebrew root for
bastard---MMZR. Chazal say that the etymology of MMZR
comes from its two 2-letter components---MM(blemish) and
ZR(Stranger). Hence

        ILLEGITIMATE (mmzr) = BLEMISHED (mm) by a STRANGER(ZR)

Quite simply then the rule states that the meaning of 4 and
5 letter roots can be derived by breaking up the root into
two 2 or 3-letter words. Some examples from Rashi are presented
below

EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Gn49-12a

The Hebrew root C-Ch-L-L means DRUNKEN EYED or RED EYED
It only occurs twice in the Bible (each time with the
word EYE (C-Ch-L-L eye). It is treated like other 4
letter roots (as a composition of 2 2-letter roots)

C-Ch-L-L (Drunken) = L-L(Swirling from the ) Ch-C (Palate)

Thus "drunkedness" is interpreted as "Swirling from the palate"

(2) Ex25-04b ARGMN (purple) = WOVEN (Arg) for APPOINTED people(MN)

    In other words, ARGMN is the color used in Royal garments

(3) Gn41-45a Josephs Egyptian name, TZFNATH PAANACH can be
        explained as a hybrid radical----
        RASHI:
      "He brings out(POA) the hidden(TZFN) from dormancy(NCH)"

        In other words Joseph was intelligent *1

(4) Lv16-08b "..and throw the Goat to AZAZEL"
        RASHI: AZAZEL means a PRECIPITOUS MOUNTAIN PEAK

        We can derive this both from internal Biblical phrases
        (4a) DESERT (Lv16-08)
        (4b) JAGGED PLACE (Lv16-22);
        (4c) AZAZL=AZ(to a hard place) (Lv16-08);

        or from the etymology

        (4d) AZAZL = AZL (thrown off) AZ (A hard place)

NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi EXPLICITLY states the 4 letter derivation in (3) but
not in (1) or (2). However consistent with our methodology we
apply this technique to other 4 letter roots where Rashi
commented.
