VERSE: Gn36-24a

RULE: Biblical sentences sometimes have extra "ANDS"*1
These extra ANDS are a common stylistic method in all
languages and denote some type of emphasis.

EXAMPLES
(1) Gn36-24a "And these are his children AND Ayah and Anah"
This verse should be translated as "And these are his children
Ayah and Anah" or "And these are his children ESPECIALLY
Ayah and Anah"

(2) Ex12-29a "And at Midnight AND God smote the firstborn"
This verse should be translated as "And at Midnight God
and HIS FULL COURT ordered the firstborn smitten"*2

(3) Lv07-16b "If you offer a thanksgiving peace offeing
then you should eat the meat that day and on the
next day ESPECIALLY the leftovers should be eaten"




NOTES
*1 Rashi uses the word VAV to denote EITHER (a) the
letter VAV, (b) the word AND, (c) a CLAUSE of a
sentence. This knowledge of how Rashi uses the word
VAV can avoid many difficulties in understanding Rashi

*2 Although the phrase "And God" occurs many times in
Tnach this is one of the few times it occurs in the
middle of a sentence. It therefore denotes emphasis...
not Just God...but God with his Full Court (ie it wasn't
revenge..the Egyptians deserved it)
