c) plurality, d) special word forms. In this posting Rashi
explains that the AYIM ending refers to objects that
intrinsically come in pairs: Such as
- hands (YaDAYIM)     - Feet (RagLAYIM)    -Hands (CapAYIM)
- Eyes (AyNAYIM)      - Breasts (ShadAYIM) -
We can infer new meanings such as NAHARAYIM (A city between 2
rivers) or SHAMAYIM=a place of multiple THERE(see footnote *10)

*1 AF refers to the nose. So APAYIM would refer to the
   two nostrils. It therefore metaphorically refers to
   complete prostration and bowing.

   When you prostrate yourself COMPLETELY on the ground
   (vs just bending at the waist) you use your hands and
   knees to completely prostrate yourself till your nose
   touches the ground--hence both nostrils (APAYIM) touch
   the ground (If you dont use your hands your nose wouldnt
   reach the ground evenly since the weight would crush it)

*2 The word HEAVEN can refer to
   - the lower atmosphere where the clouds and rain form
   - the higher heaven where the moon, sun and stars reside
   Hence HEAVEN refers to a PAIR of THEREs

    The phrase LONG SUFFERING (APAYIM) refers to a pair
    - God is long suffering to the righteous
    - God is long suffering to the wicked

    However APAYIM refers to the two nostrils. We therefore
    think that the Rashi in Nu14-18a was NOT derived from
    the AYIM ending but rather is linked to the Rashi on
    Ex34-06a

    Why does the Biblical text use a repeated word GOD
    in the verse Ex34-06
    --- GOD GOD A MERCIFUL AND GRACE BEARING GOD?
    Because as we have explained in our series on
    repeated words (See http://www.RashiYomi.com/doubl-14.htm)
    REPEATED WORDS can broaden meaning.
    - God is not only Kind to RIGHTEOUS people who sin
    - God is also kind to WICKED people who sin
    -----------------------------------------------------

    In other words the Rashi statement that God is merciful
    to both the wicked and righteous is
    - NOT derived from the AYIM ending which denotes pairs
    - BUT RATHER IS derived from the REPEATED word GOD GOD
      found in the sister verse Ex34-06 (from which Moses
      cited in Nu14-18)
    This seems to be the simplest method of understanding
    this Rashi.
