VERSE: Gn03-09a
RULES
-----
A conversation can begin
(a) ABRUPTLY: Get straight to the point and say what you want
(b) GRADUALLY: Open up first with "conversation openers"--like
'How are you', 'Have you seen so and so recently'; etc
The GRADUAL style is used by God in prophecies to
(A) show concern for the person spoken to
(B) encourage them to repent
(C) prepare him for a deep prophecy
The ABRUPT style is used by God when he
(D) Wants to punish somebody very wicked and not allow repentance
EXAMPLES
--------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(1-3) God opened gently with questions whose answers were known.
His goal was to get these individuals to REPENT
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(1) Gn04-09 "Where's your brother(Said to Kayin after his murder)"*3
(2) Gn03-09 "Where are you(Said to Adam after his sin)"*3
(3) Nu22-09 "Who are these people(Said to Bilam who wanted to
curse the Jews)" *3
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(4-6) God opened gently with questions whose answers were known.
His goal here was to PREPARE these individuals for a PROPHECY
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(4) Isa39-03 "Who are these people(Said to Chizkiyahu)"
(5) Ez37-03 "Can the bones live"(Said to Ezekiel before God gave
him the order to resurrect them)
(6) 1Sam03-04 "Samuel Samuel" (The repetitive style was to prepare
him for his 1st prophecy)
-------------------------------------------------------------
(7-8) God spoke in a chatty style to prepare people He liked
for a DIFFICULT TASK
-------------------------------------------------------------
(7) Gn22-02b Kindly take (a) your son (b) your only son (c)
the son you love (and offer him to me)---Thus
God had to prepare Abraham for the request to
sacrifice*3
(8) Gn12-01f Leave (a) your country (b) the place where you
were born (c) your fathers household--and go to
the land I show you---Thus God had to prepare
Abraham for the request to leave his land*3
--------------------------------------------------------------
(9-10) God spoke gently and REASSURINGLY--
trying to calm down obvious fears.
--------------------------------------------------------------
(9) Gn46-03 "Don't worry Jacob"(Said when Jacob went to Egypt)
(10) Gn15-01 "Don't worry Abraham"(Said to Abraham after a big war;
Abraham was worried that he might have killed righteous
people and lost merit--hence the need for reassurance)
------------------------------------------------------------------
(11-14) In these examples God spoke suddenly in order to give a
PUNISHMENT, give a warning, or an unpleasant prophecy
------------------------------------------------------------------
(11) Gn03-14 "& God said to the snake(who was punished for
tempting Eve to sin)"*1
(12) Gn12-04 "& God said SUDDENLY to Miriam (Who was punished with
Leprosy for slandering Moses)
(13) Gn31-24 "& God said to Laban (who was warned not to do
anything to Jacob)"
(14) Nu23-04 "& God HAPPENED on Bilam(who received a prophecy that
he did not like)"*2
NOTES
-----
*1 Note that God spoke to Adam, Eve and the snake after the
sin in Gan Eden. To Adam and Eve he used a conversational style
("Where are you") while with the snake there was no "conversational
opener" Hence we classify the dialogue with the snake as "sudden"
and "cold"
*2 All of Nu22 Nu23 and Nu24 show that Bilam wanted to curse the
Jews--hence the prophecies that the Jews would be blessed were
said suddenly to him
