--GRAND SUMMARY--

RULE
====
The Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay< has a fundamental meaning
of >BRINGING IN<.From this fundamental meaning we get 5 meanings

{LIST}
These are the 6 meanings of the Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay<*1
These meanings are brought both by RADACK in his book of roots
and by Rashi. The fundamental meaning according to both Rashi
and Radacks father is >TO BRING IN<. Further details are
brought in the footnotes
=================================================================
MEANING VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH THIS MEANING
========  ======= ==============================================
BRING IN Ps39-07 He gathers wealth;someone else may BRING IT IN
GATHER Nu19-09 ..& he will gather the ashes of the Cow*2
HARVEST*3 Ex34-22 ..the >GATHERING< festival
DEATH*4   Nu27-13 As Aaron your brother >DIED<
LEPER*5 2Ki5-3 & he will CURE Naaman from his Leprosy
DESTROY*6 Hos4-3 and the fish of the sea will also be destroyed

NOTES
=====
*1 Rashi only brings the first 5 meanings. But Radack admits
that verses like Hos4-3 comes from the root >Samech-Vuv-Pay<

Similarly Rashi suggests that >Aleph-Samech-Pay-Samech-Pay< in
Nu11-04 comes from the root >END<. The word >ASFSF< refers to
>TAG-ONS TO THE COMMUNITY<. Rashi explains they are called
>TAG ONS< because they stay at the >END<(>Samech-vuv-Pay<) of
the community.

In summary Rashi and Radack agree on the first 5 meanings
and have some minor controversies on whether further meanings
come from root >Samech-Vuv-Pay< or >Aleph-Samech-Pay<.

*2 Radack notes, in the name of his father that the contrast
between the Hebrew root >Kuf-Beth-Tzade< which means to
>GATHER< vs >Aleph-Samech-Pay< which means to >BRING IN<
Radacks father gives several punchy examples showing this
difference. The implication seems to be that >ASF< even
when it means >GATHER< does so in the sense of >BRINGING IN<
(See Radack, BOOK OF ROOTS, ROOT >Kuf-Beth-Tzade<)

*3 Both Rashi and Radack explain that >the whole year the grain
stays out in the field---but during the harvest season you
>BRING IT IN< to avoid the rain.

*4 Rashi & Radack disagree on the relationship between>BRING IN<
and >DEATH<. Radack suggests that since the person dies it
looks like he is BROUGHT IN to his fathers.Rashi suggests that
>the SOUL is BROUGHT in to its HOME< (Until death the person
was involved in physical things....now the soul comes home)

*5 That is, >CURING THE LEPER<. Both Rashi and Radack agree that
>CURING THE LEPER< is called >BRINGING IN< since by law,
the >LEPER< is expelled out of the Jewish camp. When he is
cured and purified he is >BROUGHT BACK IN<. Hence >CURING
the LEPER< is called >BRINGING IN<.

*6 As already pointed out, Radack admits that the root >Alpeh-
Samech-Pay< in this verse functions like the root >Samech-vuv
-Pay< and not like >Aleph-Samech-Pay< which means >END<.
Hence the root can mean destroy.

NOTES
=====
*1 Recall that >Aleph-Samech-Pay< has 5 meanings. They are
presented in a LIST above. One of these meanings is
>HARVEST< since the produce is >BROUGHT IN< from the
field to the granary.
This LIST shows the >VERSES< with >Aleph-Samech-Pay< The
LIST above shows the >MEANINGS< of >Aleph-Samech-Pay<

*2 On Gn30-23a, Gn49-29a and Nu11-30c Rashi fully develops the
idea that >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means >TO BRING IN< not to
>GATHER<. This LIST of verses from Rashi is presented below.

*3 Recall that >Aleph-Samech-Pay< has 5 meanings.
One of them is >DEATH< since the >SOUL is BROUGHT HOME<
This LIST shows the >VERSES< with >Aleph-Samech-Pay< The
LIST above shows the >MEANINGS< of >Aleph-Samech-Pay<

*4 Recall that >Aleph-Samech-Pay< has 5 meanings.
One of them is >CURING LEPROSY< since the >LEPOR< was
expelled from the >CITY< therefore when he is cured
he is BROUGHT BACK IN.
This LIST shows the >VERSES< with >Aleph-Samech-Pay< The
LIST above shows the >MEANINGS< of >Aleph-Samech-Pay<

*5 Besides the LIST of other Biblical verses where >Aleph-
Samech-Pay< means >TO BRING IN< Rashi on Nu11-30c brings
the CLINCHY Biblical verse Ps39-07 which is the strongest
proof that >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means to >BRING IN<.

*6 There are 3 Rashis on Nu11-30 but they should be read
together. The basic point of the verse is that Moses and
the elders BROUGHT THEMSELVES INTO THEIR HOUSES. Rashi
brings two additional points
---God did not punish the rebellious people UNTIL the
righteous were safely in their houses (Thus God showed
respect for the feelings of the righteous who did not
have to see their fellow Jews punished)
---Rashi also points out the technical point that
they BROUGHT THEMSELVES HOME >FROM< the Temple Tent
where God had been speaking to Moses(Nu11-16). Thus
there is a sort of >FROM< the temple tent vs >TO<
their houses.

*7 Rashi notes a contrast in this verse:
---When we are punished OTHERS take our
harvest(eg Isa62-8:9,Ju6-3)

---By contrast when we observe Gods laws
we bring in to our own house our harvest(Dt11-14e)
{END OF LIST}

{LIST}
These are the actual verses Rashi brings to prove that
the Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means >TO BRING IN<.*1
The clinchiest verse is Ps39-07 >He GATHERS
(wealth) but doesnt know who will BRING THE WEALTH into his
house (Since he might die prematurely)<
===============================================================
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH >Aleph-Samech-Pay< meaning >BRING<
========= =====================================================
Ps39-7 He gathers wealth but doesnt know who will BRING it*2
Isa4-1 BRING us(women) into your house;save us from disgrace
Ex9-19 If you dont BRING animals inside they will die in hail
Joel4-15 The sun is dark; the stars BRING IN their glimmer
Isa60-20 Your sun wont go away;your moon will not be BROUGHT IN
Ju19-15 They lived in the street;no one BROUGHT THEM IN
Dt22-02 If you find a lost article...BRING IT IN to your house
Lv23-39 On Tabernacles when you BRING YOUR HARVEST IN

NOTES
=====
*1 These verses and the clinchy Ps39-7 all are brought by Rashi
(Gn30-23a, Gn49-29a, Nu11-30c)

*2 All the commentators takes this verse the same way. >Man walks
in darkness...even though he gathers wealth he doesnt know
who will bring his wealth home since he might die<
{END OF LIST}

SUMMARY:
========
This Rashi explanation is typical of how Rashi operates.
* BEFORE RASHI
============
Most people think >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means >TO GATHER<

* AFTER RASHI
===========
Rashi shows it also means >TO BRING IN<

* CONSISTENCY IN RASHI
====================
There are about 0.2% of all Rashis that cover this theme!
By citing 1 dozen examples we give the translation richness

THE 2-WORD RASHIS
=================
* In most of these Rashis, Rashi simply says >ASF: To bring in<

THE LONG-DEFENSE RASHIS
=======================
* But in 3 Rashis, Rashi carefully shows many supporting verses

RASHI--KING OF DATABASES
========================
* Thus the LIST below totally comes from Rashi!
This LIST contains many Biblical verses showing ASF=GATHER
For this Reason we call Rashi the KING OF DATABASES

RASHI & CHILDREN
================
* Rashi,true to his pedagogic genius also gives a >child version<
He gives one nifty catchy verse that shows >ASF=Bring in<

PRAISE BE HIM WHO CHOSE THEM AND THEIR LEARNING
