The following 9 unit series is devoted to the Rashis on the Hebrew
word
        >GAM (Also)
A person completing this series will have proficiency in the 3
methods that the word
        >ALSO
is understood. In previous modules we have explained the 3
meanings of ALSO

THEME/METHOD 1: ALSO can mean AN EXTRA RECIPIENT
=================================================
EXAMPLE: (Gn20-5a) Sarah ALSO said she was Abrahams sister
        RASHI: Sarah, and her maids ALSO, said Abraham was a brother

THEME 2: ALSO can means a DERIVED or RELATED PRODUCT
====================================================
EXAMPLE:
-------
Dt23-19c Bringing a prostitutes payment to God is ALSO disgusting
        RASHI: eg If she was payed with wheat then
                >bringing WHEAT to the temple is disgusting
                >bringing FLOUR from that wheat is ALSO disgusting

THEME 3: ALSO refers to a similar ANALOGOUS RELATIONSHIP
========================================================
EXAMPLE:
--------
Ex07-23 says that at the plague of blood, that

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)
        >and didn't pay attention ALSO TO THIS

But at the 'stick turning into a snake' Ex07-13 only says

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)

Hence we have the
        >RASHI:(Ex07-23a)
        >Pharoh didn't pay attention to the plague of BLOOD
        >Pharoh ALSO didn't pay attention to the 'stick to snake'

In the last 3 issues we look at other examples of method 3
        >ALSO refers to ATTRIBUTES of a RELATIONSHIP/ACTIVITY

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 1999 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
EXAMPLE 15
----------
>Gn07-02:3 From Kosher animals take 7;
       > from non Kosher animals take 2
       > ALSO from the Birds take 7
>RASHI:
       >
       >That is from the KOSHER birds take 7
       >and take 2 from the non kosher birds
       >
       >(Because the word ALSO implies that all numbers
       >        >7 Kosher::2 Non Kosher
       >are the same for BOTH animals and birds)

This Rashi illustrates how ALSO can refer to ATTRIBUTES
        >of a RELATIONSHIP/ACTIVITY
For when the Bible says
        >take 7 birds ALSO
it means that the numerical attributes of SEVEN FOR KOSHER
and TWO FOR NONKOSHER applies to both animals and birds.

EXAMPLE 16:
-----------
>Gn29-27c (Laban and Jacob had agreed that
        >       >Jacob would work 7 years
        >       >and receive Rachel as a wife
        >But Laban swindled Jacob and gave him Leah instead of
        >Rachel--Laban then offered a 2nd deal to Jacob:)
        >
        > Complete this wedding week for Leah and we will
        > ALSO give you Rachel (now) because you will
        > work for me 7 more years
>RASHI:
        >
        >That is we will give you Rachel as a
        >2nd wife IMMEDIATELY and THEN you will work your
        >next 7 years.
        >
        >The word ALSO denotes that
        >the recipiency of Rachel
        >was like the Recipiency of Leah--
        >it was NOW and immediate.

This Rashi illustrates how ALSO can refer to ATTRIBUTES
of a RELATIONSHIP. For the ALSO in this verse implies that
the IMMEDIACY of giving Leah also applied to the giving of
Rachel.

EXAMPLE 17:
-----------
>Gn15-14a (The text is talking about the subjugation in
       >        Egypt; God concludes)
       >
       > And ALSO the nation (Egypt) which they are slaves
       > to I will judge (with 10 plagues) and then they
       > will go out with big (monetary) wealth
       >
>RASHI:
       > The word ALSO refers to all Kingdoms
       > that subjugate the Jews (not just Egypt)--
       >
       >all of them will be judged with 10 plagues and
       >the Jews will leave these other nations with monetary wealth

This Rashi illustrates how ALSO can refer to ATTRIBUTES of
of a RELATIONSHIP. Both the Exodus from Egypt and the Exodus
from any oppressing nation will have the attributes of
       >exodus by 10 plagues and
       >exodus with monetary wealth
