THE GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL STYLE RULE

EXAMPLE 7: Ex07-19e All water became blood--even baths
EXAMPLE 8: Ex07-19f All water became blood--even bottle water

BACKGROUND
----------
One of the 6 major Rashi functions is to indicate Biblical STYLE
STYLE governs whether verses are interpreted BROADLY or LITERALLY

THE TEXT-Ex07-19
----------------
God told Moses to bring the plague of blood on
------------------------------------------------------
--On Egyptian water bodies GENERAL STATEMENT
------on rivers, canals, ponds EXAMPLES
--On All Water bodies GENERAL
------------------------------------------------------

THE RASHI
---------
Rabbi Ishmael requires sentences using a
GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style to be GENERALIZED
So the verse doesnt mean to smite ONLY the rivers
canals and ponds; rather it means to smite ANY water body
like them--this includes resevoirs and bottled water

THE LISTS
---------
Here is the LIST of clauses in the verse.
TEXT of EX07-19 TYPE OF CLAUSE
God told Aaron to waive his stick Introduction
on Egyptian waters GENERAL WATER BODY
----[whether*1] rivers EXAMPLE of WATER BODY
----[or *1] canals EXAMPLE of WATER BODY
----[or *1] ponds EXAMPLE of WATER BODY
on all Water Gatherings GENERAL water Body
and it will become blood What will happen
There-ll be blood in all*2 Egypt What will happen
EVEN*1 in the wood &stone[utensils]*3 What will happen
COMMENTS

*1 The CAPPED elliptical words
   ---------------------------------------------
on Egyptian waters WHETHER rivers OR canals..EVEN utensils
   ---------------------------------------------
help suggest that the verse generalizes to ALL water bodies

*2 The CAPPED Biblical word, ALL,
   --------------------------------
   smite ALL egyptian waters
   --------------------------------
provides an alternative and supportive defense for
GENERALIZATION: ALL Egyptian waters (not just rivers)
   turned to blood. See
    http://www.RashiYomi.Com/words.htm
    http://www.RashiYomi.com/all-18.htm

*3 Rashi interprets WOOD and STONE to mean WOOD and STONE
UTENSILS. There are many utensils that are similarly
named by their SUBSTANCE, what they are made of:
e.g. (eye) glasses, (drinking) glasses, linoleum(floors)
