VERSE: Ex20-01b
RASHIS COVERED: Ex20-01b Ex20-03a Ex20-07a Lv19-12a
======================== BIBLICAL FOOTNOTES ====================
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
A standard introductory verse to a Biblical commandment is
AND GOD SPOKE TO MOSES. However Ex20-01 which introduces the
10 commandments begins AND GOD SPOKE ALL THESE WORDS TO MOSES.
-- AND GOD SPOKE --- ----- ----- TO MOSES
-- AND GOD SPOKE all these words TO MOSES
Note the extra phrase--ALL THESE WORDS--with an emphasis
on the delivery of ALL words. In fact comparing the two versions
of the 10 commandments (Ex20 vs Dt05) we see minor word
differences. These minor word differences indicate nuances and
emphasize footnote commentaries to the commandments.

TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: TWO CASES
----------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.
But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.
The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances.
A nifty way of explaining the ALIGNED verses is to think
of ALIGNMENT as the vehicle that the Biblical Author uses
to indicate FOOTNOTES. That is, a modern writer might use
FOOTNOTES to indicate details; the Biblical Author instead
used REPEATED ALIGNED VERSES with DIFFERENT DETAILS.
The simplest case of ALIGNMENT is when the differences
CLEARLY and EXPLICITLY show that we are dealing with
two cases each with different details. The STANDARD
example below from the 10 commandments illustrates this
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Perhaps the simplest example of an alignment revealing
two cases and two laws occurs in the 10 commandments.
Ex01-02:03 states
----------------------------------------------
Ex20-02 you shall NOT HAVE the gods of others
Ex20-03 you shall NOT MAKE idols
----------------------------------------------
STUDENT EXERCISES:
------------------
-- What is the SAME in the ALIGNED verses
-- What is DIFFERENT in the ALIGNED verses
-- State the 2 CASES you infer from the aligned differences
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
- Both verses begin YOU SHALL NOT. In other words
they are negative prohibitions.
- One verse prohibits HAVING idols while the 2nd verse
prohibits MAKING idols
- THere are 2 separate idolatry prohibitions: MANUFACTURE
(even if you dont keep them) and OWNERSHIP/POSSESION
(even if you dont make them)

Or you can visit the Rashi Yomi Calendar at

This calendar presents a day by day listing of Rashis.
The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
3 student exercises listed above.
The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We first compare the introductory verses to Biblical
commandments--this comparison shows that God intentionally
placed differences so as to indicate footnotes. We then
show examples of these footnotes in the 3rd commandment.

VERSE PHRASE1 PHRASE3
======== ======================= ===============================
Nu15-37 God spoke to Moses
Ex20-01b God spoke ALL these things to Moses
*1 *2 *1
-------- ----------- ------------------- -----------------------
Lv19-12 don't swear falsely in my name
Ex20-07 don't bear for nought the name of God
*4 *5 *6
-------- ----------- ------------------- ------------------------
NOTES
-----
*1 These phrases are the same in both verses.
*2 This phrase ALL THESE WORDS only occurs ONCE in the whole
Bible, by the introduction to the 10 commandments. It
does not occur in the introduction to any other
commandment. Thus there is an emphasis on all WORDS
This refers to the ALIGNMENT method whereby two verses
are repeated with ALMOST identical language but with
minor differences. The minor differences suggest nuances
which indicate laws. An example is given in the list
above and in footnotes 4 thru 6.
*4 (Not in Rashi) The prohibition of false oaths applies
whether you actually SWEAR or even if you just "Bear"
Gods name (as eg by using a slang word for swearing)
*5 (Not in Rashi) The prohibition of false oaths applies
whether you swear falsely ("That tree is sand") or swear
for nought ("That tree is a tree")
*6 The prohibition of false oaths applies whether you swear
by God or by a "name of God"(Such as the "All merciful")
