==================== Ex14-18c =======================
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain
Grammar the same way modern Hebrew books
explain grammar.
Particularly important is the explanation
of grammatical conjugation. Rashi had a
special method of teaching conjugation--
Rashi taught grammar using the method of
NEAR MISSES in which he either juxtaposes
(a)two grammatical forms which
differ in only one small detail or
(b)two identical forms which however differ
in meaning.
Such NEAR MISSES help reinforce the various
rules of grammar.
EXAMPLES
--------
1) NoChoM means to LEAD THEM (The same KAMATZ
KAMATZ form however can refer to a noun. The
similar KAMATZ PATACH form refers to activity
(VERB vs NOUN) without an INDIRECT OBJECT.
2) OShoN means SMOKE: Oshan mean TO SMOKE
3) HoMoM means to CRUSH THEM: HoMaM means TO CRUSH
4) PaChaZ means FIZ while PoChaZ means TO FIZ
5) YaMooSH means IT DEPARTS while YaMeeSH means
SOMEONE MOVES IT
6) NeBuChiM has root N-B-X (Entangled)

=================== LIST701a ==================
The following verses all have verb forms
whose meaning would change if only one vowel
in the form changes.
We call this the method of NEAR MISSES since
we emphasize the meaning of forms by showing
comparable forms that are highly similar but
nevertheless differ in meaning.
The footnotes illumine further

NOTES
-----
*1 NoChoM (Kamatz Kamatz) means to LEAD THEM
NoChaM (Kamatz Patach) means to LEAD
The final MeM indicates the direct object
(LEAD THEM) with the Kamatz Kamatz
punctuation
*2 HoMoM (Kamatz Kamatz) means to CRUSH THEM
HoMaM (Kamatz Patach) means to CRUSH
The final MeM indicates the direct object
(CRUSH THEM) with the Kamatz Kamatz
punctuation
*3 oShoN (Kamatz Kamatz) is SMOKE (A noun)
oSHaN (Kamatz Patach) is TO SMOKE(Verb)
*4 YoMooSH means IT MOVE (Active tense)
YoMeeSH means SOMEONE MOVES IT(Causative tense)
My favorite reference for root conjugations
is the Appendix of the Ibn Shoshan Dictionary
Table 6 presents the conjugation of the
1-vuv-3 roots which illustrates the contrast
between YoMooSH and YoMeeSH
*5 PaCHaZ means FIZ(Noun)
PoCHaZ means TO FIZ(Verb)
The verse describes Reuvens personality as
FIZZING like water, denoting his impetuousness
in acting out of zeal without thinking of
consquences or implication. Hence he lost the
birthright

================ LIST701b ==============================
We summarize in this list 2-vowel words where each
vowel is a KAMATZ or PATACH.*1 As can be seen
- KAMATZ PATACH refers to a VERB
- PATACH PATACH refers to a NOUN
- KAMATZ KAMATZ can refer to a NOUN or DIRECT OBJECT

*1 A delightful way to find similar verb forms is
to use Moshe Silbermans Grammatical Form
Konkordance
KAMATZ KAMATZ is Form 5548 and Form 1450.
KAMATZ PATACH is form 5480.
Here are some KAMATZ KAMATZ verbs courtesy
of Moshe In all of them the form refers to
doing an activity (VERB) to someone else

============= LIST702a ================
Ex14-18c has the word NeBuCHiM.
Radack and Mendelkorn think this comes
from the Root Beth-Vuv-Caph.
Rashi however brilliantly notes that
the proper root is Nun-Beth-Caph.
According to Rashi
- root Beth-Vuv-Caph means CONFUSED
- root Nun-Beth-Caph means ENTANGLED
To defend this we need two lists
- LIST702a The FORM NeBuCHiM which
indicates a participle (Something was
done to it eg BLESSED, ENTANGLED,
COVERED, etc)*1
- LIST702b The MEANING of N-B-X is
ENTANGLED The verses in the 2nd list
all denote some type of ENTANGLEMENT
or TRAPPING.*2
=======================================
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE: Particple CAPPED

1S30-16 SPREAD OUT on the field

Ex26-32 COVERED with silver
NOTES
-----
*1 This is Form 1798 in Silbermans
Grammatical form Konkordance.
Silberman brings 20 examples of
this form.
Interestingly Silberman follows
Radack who sees NeBuCHiM as coming
from root B-V-X in which case the
form would be bizarre. However
Rashis approach makes everything
natural
*2 Why did Radack ignore Rashis Simple
approach? Probably because there
are only 3 verses with root N-B-X
(LIST702b). It didnt seem worth it
to make an extra root for just
3 verses.
But the evidence for Rashi is
overwhelming. The meaning ENTANGLED/
TRAPPED fits perfectly and the
FORM is consistent with the other
2 dozen examples in this form brought
by SIlberman
