OVERVIEW:
========
This module deals with Rashis which comment on verses with
>REPEATED WORDS<. The basic technique for >REPEATED WORDS<
was succinctly formulated by the MALBIM

     --------------------------------------------------------
     When a word is >REPEATED< unnecessarily then the
     sentence with that word refers to >NON-STANDARD NUANCES<
     The examples will illustrate how this is implemented
     --------------------------------------------------------

TODAYS UNIT
===========
We start today and tomorrow with a simple application of
this principle. We explore about half a dozen verses where
a >REPETITION< extends the verses meaning both to the
person spoken about as well as their family.

RULE
====
In the following example something is said to a person >USING
A REPEATED WORD<. The >repetition< >extends< the meaning of
the verse from focusing only on the person spoken to so that
the focus is both on the person and on his ancestors or
progeny.

In other words the >REPETITION< changes the meaning
of the sentence to include >non-standard nuances< This is
the fundamental idea behind all >REPETITION<

EXAMPLE 1: Gn22-17a
=========
BACKGROUND
----------
The Bible records the conversation of God to Abraham after he
successfully passed the test of offering his son Isaac. God says

VERSE
-----
        -------------------------
        I will >BLESS BLESS< you
        -------------------------

RASHI
-----
Rashi explains the repeated word >BLESS< as follows: The
>standard< meaning of the sentence >I will
bless you< means that Abraham will be blessed. The sentence
with the repeated word >I will bless bless you< gives
the sentence a non-standard meaning: Both Abraham and his
descendants will be blessed.

An example of Rashis interpretation may be found in the Patriarch
Isaac, Abrahams son. Isaac was able on this power to bless his
son Esauv.

EXAMPLE 2: Gn22-17b
=========
BACKGROUND
----------
The Bible records the conversation of God to Abraham after he
successfully passed the test of offering his son Isaac. God says

VERSE
-----
        ------------------------------
        I will >MULTIPLE MULTIPLY< you
        ------------------------------

RASHI
-----
Rashi explains the repeated word >MULTIPLY< as follows: The
>standard< meaning of the sentence >I will
multiply you< means that Abraham will have many chidren. The
repeated word >MULTIPLY< in the sentence >I will
multiply multiply you< gives the sentence a non-standard
meaning: Both Abraham and his descendants will multiply alot

An example of Rashis interpretation may be found in the Patriarch
Isaac, Abrahams son. Isaac was able on this to bless his
son Esauv that he should multiply.

EXAMPLE 3: Gn26-28a
=========
BACKGROUND
----------
Avimelech came to make a treaty with Isaac. Isaac protested that
Avimelech hated him (So why did he want a treaty). Avimelech
responds

VERSE
-----
        ----------------------------------------
        We have >SEEN SEEN< that God is with you
        -----------------------------------------

RASHI
-----
Rashi explains the repeated word >SEEN<. The sentence
>We have seen that God is with you< would mean that God
is with Isaac. The sentence with the repeated word
>We have SEEN SEEN that God is with you< implies a
non-standard nuance--Avimelech saw that God was BOTH with
Isaac and with his ancestors Abraham. (See Gn21-22 for
the treaty between Avimelech and Abraham--so indeed Avimelech
saw that God was both with Isaac and his ancestors)

EXAMPLE 4: Gn32-13a
=========
BACKGROUND
----------
Jacob in praying to God to save him from his brother states

VERSE
-----
        ---------------------------------------------
        & You Oh God said: I will be GOOD GOOD to you
        ----------------------------------------------

RASHI
-----
Rashi explains that >I will be good to you< implies
that God will be good to Jacob because of his good deeds
The sentence with the repeated word >I will be good good
to you< implies that God will be good to Jacob BOTH
because of Jacobs merit and the merit of Jacobs fathers.
