GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review the alignment
---of 2 verses on wounding/killing animals
---of 4 verses on the famous 4 sons of Passover

ALIGNMENT OF TWO VERSES ON WOUNDING ANIMALS

EXAMPLE 19: Lv24-21a Pay for both WOUNDING/KILLING an animal

The LIST below aligns two verses on WOUNDING/KILLING
animals. From the minor differences in the alignment
we infer a broader scope to the applicability of the law
VERSEPhrase1Phrase2Phrase3
Lv24-21He who smitesan animalmust pay for it
Lv24-18He who smitesthe soul of an animalmust pay for it
Differs*1*2*1
COMMENTS

*1 These phrases are identical in both verses

*2 Lv24-21 refers to WOUNDING ----------- AN ANIMAL
LV24-18 refers to KILLING THE SOUL OF AN ANIMAL

In both cases you pay according to what you damaged

NOTE By contrast you do pay if you WOUND a human but
you dont pay if you KILL a human (You either get executed
or else get exiled to a refuge city)
THE FAMOUS 4 SONS IN THE PASSOVER HAGADDAH

EXAMPLE 20: Ex13-05d The famous four sons of Passover

There are exactly 4 verses in the Bible which talk about
----------------------------------------------------
instructing children about the Exodus from Egypt
----------------------------------------------------

The minor differences in phraseology between these 4 children
uncovers 4 different student types to which the Torah
presented 4 different methods of pedagogy.

Although the 4 sons is well known and famous, the database
justification for the 4 sons is not so well known. It is
compactly presented below where we see the reasons why
the Talmudic Sages identified each verse with a particular
son.
SONVERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2
WickedEx12-26when your sonSAYS to youwhats this
SimpleEx13-14when your sonASKS you..whats this
WiseDt06-20when your sonASKSwhat are these laws
ApatheticEx13-05
Differs-------*1*2*3
COMMENTS

*1 These phrases are identical in each verse

*2 The wicked son rhetorically and cynically SAYS his questions.
Hence he is classified as WICKED.

The apathetic or DOESNT CARE SON does not ask and hence is
   classified as APATHETIC.

The WISE & SIMPLE son both ASK their question. The distinction
between them is because of the content of their question:

--The simple son simply says WHAT IS THIS
--while the wise son says WHAT ARE THE STATUES, LAWS, RITUALS

In other words the wise son uses more distinctions (Because of
space I have omitted the actual text of the wise son, Dt06-20,
but it can easily be checked in any Bible).

The interpretation of Ex13-05 as APATHETIC is due to Rabbi
Joseph Baer Soloveitchick, the Rav, who suggested that
the standard translation---the CANT-TALK son, referring to
an infant---would be superfluous since the CANT-TALK son
is logically the same as the SIMPLE SON. Hence the Rav
   interprets Ex13-05 as APATHETIC.
