 GOALS

This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.


TODAYS UNIT

In todays module we align 4 verses dealing with punishment.

As we finish this unit on Alignment we bring some
examples where the alignment is not by WORDS but
rather by CONCEPTS.

ALIGNMENT OF PUNISHMENT OF 4 PEOPLE

BACKGROUND
----------
In the LIST below 4 people are punished by God for sins

THE TEXT
--------
A typical text will have 2-3 components
- God asks the person WHY they sinned
- THe person gives a response (This is sometimes absent)
- God punishes the person


THE RASHI
---------
But in one of the examples there is PUNISHMENT without
PRIOR dialogue on WHY the sin was done! Rashi explains
- Part of judicial process is to ask for a defense from
the defendant EVEN IF it is clear they are guilty This
makes the process JUST and gives a proper atmosphere

- There is no mercy or dialogue with a person who trys
to get other people to sin(Since he cant repent for
his corruption of others) Hence such a person--who
temps others to sin is punished without proper dialogue

   The snake did not violate Gods will but rather asked
   Eve to violate Gods will. THere was no way for the
   SNAKE to repent for EVES sin.
