The verses are lined up and the minor differences between

ALIGNMENT OF DESCRIPTIONS OF JACOBS GRANDCHILDREN
 

EXAMPLE 94: gn46-10a

BACKGROUND
----------
Gn46 describes all the children and grandchildren that
accompanied Jacob when he went down to Egypt. In total
there were 70 (or so) people who went down with Jacob


THE TEXT
--------
All the children are mentioned AS IS. But one child is
mentioned as descending from somebody
SHAUL THE SON OF THE CANAANITE WOMAN

THE RASHI
---------
Besides the alignment anomaly, Rashi points out that
Jews never married Canaanites as all the Patriarchs
prohibited marrying them. Rashi therefore suggests
that SHAUL was the son of Dinah who was raped by
SCHEM who behaved like a CANAANITE.

COMMENTS

*1 Note the anomaly that only Saul has his mother mentioned
   Gn46-11 is listing SHIMONS children.

   It might seem reasonable to assume that Shimon married a
   Canaanite woman. But the Patriarchs all prohibited this!

   Hence Rashi, interprets CANNANITE as referring to Schem
   who raped Dinah (Gn34). The child from that Rape was
   Shaul. Since Shaul is listed as Shimons child we assume
   that Shimon married Dinah (And this is the source for it)
   Finally Schem is called a Canaanite either because he
   behaved like one or because Chivi, his real nation, had
   an alliance with Canaan.

*2 The above explanation of Rashi (Footnote #1) comes
   from the Midrash.Rashi cites the beginning of a midrash--
   which gives 5 opinions on why Dinah is called the CANAANITE.

   It is the position of this email group that Rashi did not
   take sides in these midrashim. RATHER HE CITED THE FIRST
   MIDRASH IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO READ ALL THE
   MIDRASHIM.

   The 5 opinions on why Dinah is called the Canaanite relate
   to 5 focuses on Rape victims:
   - HOW They get raped
   - WHO the rapist is (RACIST comments)
   - SOCIAL stigma of Rape: How the rape victim is talked about
