GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
Todays alignment is still my favorite. Balak requested
that Bilam formally curse the Jews. Bilam then repeated
Balaks request to God. Hence we can compare Balaks request
and Bilams citation of that request.

10 very minor differences emerge--
these 10 differences spell the difference between
the politically motivated request of the diplomatic Balak
and a request motivated by hatred (Bilams).

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
===============
To my sister; While in High School she came to me one day
and asked for help with Chumash homework. This posting hasnt
changed much in the decades since.

BACKGROUND
----------
Balak, a king, was nervous that the Jews leaving Egypt were
nearby. So he hired a non-jewish prophet, Bilam, to curse
the Jews. Bilam repeated Balaks request to God.

THE TEXT
--------
Nu22-05:06 contains BALAKS REQUEST to curse the Jews
Nu22-11 contains BILAMS CITATION of this request to God.
The 2 versions of the request have 10 minor differences.

THE RASHI
---------
6 Rashis discuss some of the 10 differences. Rashi used
WORKBOOK methods. He expected the reader to apply what
he was taught to ALL 10 differences.

It turns out that the there is one fundamental difference
between Balak and Bilam. Balaks request was POLITICAL
based on concern with a foreign power nearby. Bilams request
was motivated by HATRED.

This one fundamental difference gives rise to 3 differences

-(Footnotes *2*3*4*8) The Reason-Hate difference
-----------------------------------------------
Balak was political and hence gave reasons for his
request of a curse
-They conquered Egypt;
-They are bigger than me;
-they are in Military formation
-Therefore curse;

Bilam by contrast was motivated by hatred. He didnt
cite Balaks reasons. He simply hated

-(Footnotes *6*9*10) The Warning-Destruction difference
-------------------------------------------------------

Balak was motivated politically--he just wanted the Jews
at a distance; by contrast Bilam hated the Jews and wanted
them Destroyed. Hence Balak requested
-curse them (vs Bilams INTENSELY curse)
-fire a warning shot (vs Bilams FIGHT THEM)
-banish them FROM HERE (vs Bilams BANISH THEM)

-(Footnotes *1*5*7) The Diplomatic-Hatred Theme
-----------------------------------------------
Balak was motivated politically and spoke like a
diplomat; By contrast Bilams language showed great
signs of hatred
-Bilam spoke about THEM (vs Balak spoke about THIS NATION)
-Balak said PLEASE in his request (a word Bilam didnt know)
-Balak was concerned about A Nation (vs Bilams THE nation)

THE LIST
--------
Here is the actual LIST. Further details on some of these
differences are contained in the URLS above. For example
we present a list showing that the Hebrew KBH means to
INTENSELY CURSE while the Hebrew ARH means to CURSE.
