 GOALS

This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

Alignment of 3 Verses on Temple Construction
 

EXAMPLE 63: Ex25-40a Moses needed extra explanation of Menorah
EXMAPLE 64: Ex26-30a Moses was taught HowTo construct/erect Tmpl
EXAMPLE 65: Ex26-30b Moses was taught how to erect Temple

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex25 - Ex40 describes the construction of the temple utensils
and the erection of the temple. About a dozen temple utensils
are mentioned.

THE TEXT
--------
But only 3 of these temple utensils have the phrase

and you should make this utensil AS I HAVE SHOWN YOU
-----------------------------------------------------
or some similar language

In some verses it says GOD HAD SHOWN MOSES--In some verses
it says GOD WAS SHOWING MOSES. From this we infer that

*1 It says SEE the Menorah but does not say SEE the Mishkan or
   altar. Hence Moses was shown the Menorah again

*2 Two visions were shown to Moses. Moses was shown

   - how to ERECT the temple after the utensils were made
   ------------------------------------------------------
   This separation of UTENSIL CONSTRUCTION and TEMPLE ERECTION
   is more explicitly seen at the end of Exodus.

   the Candellabrah form was shown again.

*4 Rashi uses what today is ordinary grammar tables to justify
   these translations. From them it emerges that Moses

*5 There is a philosophical point here. Why did Moses have to be
   shown the construction of the Temple Menorah again? Apparently
   because he had difficulty constructing the Temple Menorah.
   The philosophical point is that the Menorah symbolizes
   the EDUCATION PROCESS FROM INFANCY TO ADULTHOOD (A la Rav
   Hirsch, the 18 inches of the Menorah represent ed curriculum
   during the first 18 years of life). BUT MOSES COULD NOT
   UNDERSTAND EDUCATIONAL GROWTH-- Moses was a perfect being
   and therefore needed help in understanding education. Hence
   he was shown the Menorah again.
