GOALS ===== This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same. The verses are lined up and the minor differences between them function as footnotes illuminating the text. TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we align 3 whole Biblical chapters dealing with holidays. The Alignment technique we use was only developed in the past 10 years. This shows Rashi as the King of Databases; For those who are familiar with databases the technical term is a THETA-OUTER-JOIN. This concept came into vogue in the last decade or so. Alignment of 3 Chapters on Biblical Holidays EXAMPLE 51: Nu28-26a BACKGROUND ---------- Several chapters in the Bible LIST all the Jewish holidays. The Jewish Holidays are called by various names. For example Passover might be called PASSOVER or the FEAST OF MATZOH. THE TEXT -------- We compare 3 chapters on the holidays. --One in Lv23 --One in Nu28 --One in Dt16 THE RASHI ---------- Rashis idea is simple. The names of holidays on the same dates in each chapter must correspond! From this alignment we infer that THE FESTIVAL OF FIRST FRUITS refers to SHAVUOTH.*1 Here is the LIST of 3 chaptersLv Chap Lv Holiday Nu Chap Nu Holiday Dt Chap Holiday Lv23-04 Passover Nu28-16 Passover Dt16-01 Passover Lv23-15 ---------------- Nu28-26 1stFruit*2*3 Dt16-09 Shavuot Lv23-23 Memorial Blowing Nu29-01 Day of Blowing ------- ------- Lv23-26 Yom Kippur Nu29-07 Holiday ------- -------- Lv23-33 Succoth Nu29-12 Succoth Dt16-13 Succoth COMMENTS *1 The idea of linking several chapters, not by a common name, but rather by implied dates is called a theta join. This concept was first defined only 10 years ago. But Rashi was using it several centuries ago. It is for this reason that we call Rashi the King of Databases *2 From the alignment we see that SHAVUOTH is the holiday of 1st fruits *3 It might be worthwhile to review the difference between the Leibowitz-Boncheck approach and the Rabbi-Ishmael-Dr-Hendel approach. Dr Leibowitz and Rabbi Boncheck basically review the PROBLEM In this case the question is WHY IS A HOLIDAY CALLED THE FESTIVAL OF FIRST FRUITS. The answer is BECAUSE OF THE FIRST WHEAT CROP WHICH IS OFFERED ON SHAVUOTH Rabbi Ishmael and Dr Hendel review not the problem but the DATABASE QUERY. In this case we seek the LIST OF HOLIDAYS The LIST of HOLIDAYS shows that SHAVUOTH aligns with the FESTIVAL OF FIRST FRUIT and this ALIGNMENT is sufficient to justify identifying SHAVUOTH with the HOLIDAY of 1st fruit Of course to a certain extent these views overlap. Clearly a person would be unsatisfied if all they were told is that the DATABASE SAYS SO. One needs further clarification as to why the two names exist.h --- d> tr>
