GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review the alignment
of 2 verses prohibiting swearing falsely.

ALIGNMENT OF TWO VERSES PROHIBITING FALSE SWEARING

EXAMPLE 23: Ex20-07a: Dont swear EITHER FALSELY or for NOUGHT
EXAMPLE 24: Lv19-12a: Dont swear by ANY NAME of GOD

We align below two verses prohibiting false swearing.
From the 3 minor differences we learn 3 laws.

Here is the LIST. Comments on Rashis use of WORKBOOK
METHODS for purposes of PEDAGOGY is contained in footnote
*4 which is best read after the remainder of the LIST is
read

Lv19-12don't swearfalselyin my name
Ex20-07don't bearfor noughtthe name of God

COMMENTS

*1 (Not in Rashi) The prohibition of false oaths applies
    ---whether you actually SWEAR or
    ---whether you just BEAR Gods name
    (as eg by using a slang word for swearing as e.g. you
     say I CUSS IN THE NAME OF GOD IF SUCH AND SUCH ISNT TRUE;
     Such a statement is a violation of a Biblical law if done
     falsely EVEN though you didnt use the actual word SWEAR)

*2 (Rashi Ex20-07a) The prohibition of false oaths applies
   ---- whether you swear FALSELY (eg THAT TREE IS GOLD) or
   ---- whether you swear for NOUGHT (eg THAT TREE IS A TREE)

*3 (Rashi Lv19-12a) The prohibition of false oaths applies
   ---whether you swear by the ACTUAL NAME OF GOD or
   ---whether you just swear to GOD (e.g. You swear by the
      HOLY ONE but dont actually utter Gods Actual name;
      You nevertheless, if you have sworn falsely, have
      violated a full Biblical prohibition)

*4 In passing note Rashis masterful use of WORKBOOK METHODS
   There were 3 differences on this alignment. Rashi comments
   on two AND THEREBY ENCOURAGES THE READER TO RESEARCH THE
   REASON FOR THE 3rd. Such an approach is called in modern
   pedagogy the WORKBOOK method---certain problems are WORKED
   OUT in the workbook while other similar problems have to
   be done by the student.
