SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. One method of paragraph
structure is to use the THEME-DETAIL-THEME style.

EXAMPLE Ex30-34d,Ex30-34e
-------------------------
Ex30-34 discusses the perfume ingredients of the Temple
perfume. The structure used is GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL
- GENERAL: Take perfumes
- DETAILS: ------------- Drippy, Shiny, Fatty perfumes
- GENERAL: Perfumes and
- ------- pure frankincense

Each of these perfumes had specific characteristics
- DRIPPY perfume was gathered from BARK DRIPS
- SHINY perfume came from SHINY looking plants
- FATTY perfume smelled like putrid FAT

The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style requires that we
perceive the entire unit as a paragraph with a
general theme. Therefore we generalize the DETAILS
listed to ANYTHING SIMILAR to them that fits the
GENERAL theme. Hence we take all similar perfumes
(those that drip, those that are shiny and those
that are bad smelling). The PURE FRANKINCENSE
is mentioned SEPARATELY and is added as is.

Rashi further gives SYMBOLIC meaning to these items:
- SHINY perfume refers to FLASHY people on the go
- FATTY perfume refers to OBESE people who dont
control themselves and always say yes
- DRIPPY perfume refers to STATELY PEOPLE who do
things BIT by BIT (Drop by drop) and know how
to exercise restraint.
All three people types are needed in the community
and this is symbolized by the KETORETH which had
all ingredients.

GENERAL TAKE PERFUMES
DETAIL ------------- Drippy perfume*1
DETAIL ------------- Shiny perfume*2
DETAIL ------------- Fatty perfume*3
GENERAL PERFUMES
------ and pure frankincense*5
COMMENTS
*1 The perfumed was collected from DRIPPING bark

*2 The perfume came from SHINY plants

*3 The perfume SMELLED like putrid FAT

*4 So The Ketoreth had perfumes of all 3 types (DRIPPY,
SHINY and FATTY)*10

*5 Since the pure frankincense is mentioned AFTER
the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL therefore it is taken AS IS
and separately.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi gives the 11 ingredients of the Ketoreth.
However the proper approach to Rashi is as follows
- The Bible requires 3 types of perfumes
- The Oral Traditions list 11 perfumes which fit
any one of these 3 types
In other words we should perceive the oral
traditions as also reflecting the requirements of the
verse.
