SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
For a comprehensive but short introduction to symbolism
see the essay http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm

Rav Hirsch showed that in sacrifices that
- OX means that the Jews are COWORKERS with God
leading the nations thru history
- RAM refers to Jewish LEADERS who help shepard Gods flock
- SHEEP refer to the Jewish masses who FOLLOW
These symbols are based on many explicit verses

Remarkably however Rashi states that
- OX    = Abraham=Abraham Co-worked with God
- RAM   = Isaac = Isaac leads Jacob/Esauv
- SHEEP = Jacob = The sheepish worker who follows his boss

It thus appears that Rashi and Rav Hirsch differ!!!

But a clever alignment of the half dozen verses mentioning
the holiday OXEN, RAMS, SHEEPS shows that
- the word,AND never occurs (1 OX, 1 RAM, 7 SHEEP)
- By Passover,AND,occurs twice (1 Ox AND 1 Ram AND 7 Sheep)
- By the New Moon AND occurs once (1 ox AND 1 Ram, 7 Sheep)

This is easy to explain. In most holidays the forces of the
patriarchs are distinct--eg on Shavuoth some people are
like ABRAHAM being a beacon of light to the nations;
some people are Rabbinic Rams=Leaders(Like ISAAC)
while most Jews are SHEEP, FOLLOWERS(Like JACOB)

But on Passover every Jew combines the forces of all
3 Patriarchs (All Jews CO-WORK with God to show the
world the meaning of Freedom; All Jews LEAD their
families in their seders and All Jews FOLLOW others
Hence the 3 Patriarchs combine on Passover(AND AND)

On the New moon(Which commemorates the Golden-calf
incident) the Coworkers (Moses) and the leaders
(Tribe of Levi) were with God (1 AND) while the
Jewish people rebelled (Sheep separate).

So Rashi-is-Simple: There is no controversy
- Rav Hirsch explained the meaning of the HOLIDAY SACRIFICES
- Rashi, by contrast, explained the usage of AND
Rashi and Rav Hirsch are both 100% correct. They were
talking about different things. There is no disagreement
Only complete harmony.

An alignment of the half dozen holiday sacrifices
involving Ox, Ram and Sheep
VERSE HOLIDAY OX AND? RAM AND? SHEEP
Nu28-11 New Moon 1 Ox and*1 1 Ram 7 sheep
Nu28-19 Passover 1 Ox and*2 1 Ram and*2 7 sheep
Nu28-27 Pentecost 1 Ox 1 Ram 7 sheep*3
Nu29-02 New Year 1 Ox 1 Ram 7 sheep*3
Nu29-08 Yom Kippur 1 Ox 1 Ram 7 Sheep*3
Nu29-13 Succoth 1 Ox 1 Ram 7 Sheep*3
COMMENTS
*1 The New Moon commemorates the Golden calf
Gods co-workers(=Ox=Moses) and the Jewish leadership
(=Ram=Levi) were united while the Jewish masses(Sheep)
were separate

*2 On Passover the forces of all 3 Patriarchs combine
The Jews lead the world (=Ox = Coworker with God);
the Jews lead each other in the Seder(Ram=Leader);
the Jews follow their leaders(Sheep=Follower)*10

*3 On the other holidays different factions of the
Jewish people represent different forces
- Some lead the nations (Like Joseph)=Coworker with God=Ox
- Some lead the Jew (Like Rabbis/Priests)=Leader=Ram
- Some just follow(Like the masses)=Follower=Sheep

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Again: Rashi and Rav Hirsch dont disagree but rather
complement each other

- Rav Hirsch explains the symbolism of the offerings
- Rashi explains why the word AND sometimes occur

One more item: Rashi actually says that
- Isaac is the Ram because of the Ram of the Akaydah
- Jacob is the Sheep because he was a shepard
- Abraham is the Ox because he served Oxen

But Rashi (as he sometimes does) was only giving nifty
examples so people could remember. The truth of the
matter is that

Abraham=Coworker with God leading the nations=Ox
Isaac  =Leader of Jacob/Esauv=Ram
Jacob  =Exile Jew--sheepish--follower

Instead of giving abstract symbolism Rashi simply
uses catchy examples. The main point however is
that Rashi explains AND and Rav Hirsch explains the
general SYMBOLISM.

Finally we understand why Rashi cited Rav Moshe
Hadarsham since this explanation refers to subtle
aligned VAVs.
