VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to give the meanings of words the same way the dictionary does. Rashi sometimes traces SPECIAL WORDS that occur several dozen times in the Torah-- Rashi shows a unifying thread and commonality of meaning. The word LAYMOR is the infinitive of the word TO SAY--so the simple translation of LAYMOR means TO BE SAID. In the lists below we will explore 4 manifestations of verses where TO BE SAID occurs. *1 As the verse indicates: Moses told them there was a death penalty to anyone who tried to mount the mountain during the decalogue *2 Charity is the only commandment where it says TO BE SAID. The chapter involved clearly states the reward for giving charity. Cf Mal03-10 for an explicit statement that we can TEST God in Charity (If we give to Charity we will be rewarded) Charity is the only commandment on which we can test God *3 It is clear from Ex33-12:23 that the revelation of Gods attributes of Mercy were a response to Moses request for God to reveal to Moses how God runs the world---such a revelation would help Moses in leading the people. Hence God wanted this information spread Everyone should know that God forgives repentant people *4 Not all prophecies are meant to be public and spread. But the Promise to the Patriarchs to give the Jews Israel is public and meant to be spread. Hence God tell Moses here is the land I promised the Patriarchs 400 years ago. | |||
