RASHIS COVERED: Nu06-20b AYIN LAMED means BESIDES
Ex29-25a

QUESTION
--------
Ex01-05a states that PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING ON THE NILE
But Rashi states that the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED means NEAR.
Thus Rashi translates the verse: PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING
NEAR THE NILE. Is this the real meaning of AYIN-LAMED? Can
other examples be produced.

ANSWER
------
The Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is usually translated as
ON in fact has half a dozen meanings in addition to the special
idiomatic meanings it has with other words. Here are some
examples: AYIN-LAMED can mean a) ON, b) WITH, c) AT THE TIME OF
d) TOWARDS, e) FOR, f) NEAR, g) BESIDES. Furthermore in
conjunction with other words it can have idiomatic meaning--for
example it can mean a) DEPRESSED, b) THEREFORE or SINCE.

VERSE TEXT OF VERSE:AYIN-LAMED MEANS besides

Lv04-10b ...offer them BESIDES the liver,kidneys*2....
Ex29-25a Offer them BESIDES the MORNING OLAH*1 *2
COMMENTS
*1 The primary meaning of the word AYIN LAMED is ON.
ON denotes PROXIMITY IN AN ORDERED SEQUENCE
For example gravity defines a natural order(bottom-top)
and ON indicates that something is on TOP vs BOTTOM.

Similarly ON in the temporal sphere could indicate
that something is AFTER something else.

The commonality to ON and BESIDES is that both denote
AFTERNESS; the difference is that ON emphasizes TEMPORAL
proximity while BESIDES emphasizes AFTERNESS without
any necessary proximity.

In some of the verses above we speak about an additional
offering that is offered IMMEDIATELY AFTER the morning
OFFERING and hence ON (temporal vs spatial) is a more
precise translation than BESIDES. However in Lv03-05a
the emphasis is on BESIDES (The PEACE offering can be
offered ANY time after the MORNING offering).

*2 In these verses the translation BESIDES and IN ADDITION
are EQUALLY valid. Both these concepts relate to ON--
since ON indicates that one thing goes on TOP (Besides
or IN ADDITION) to something on BOTTOM. The only
difference is that ON has a nuance of temporal sequence
