SHAAR=CITY=JUDGEMENT PLACE

RASHIS COVERED: Dt16-18c SHAAR can means CITY/PUBLICLY/COURT
Gn23-18a Dt09-06b
Dt15-07c Dt25-07a Dt17-05a Dt14-21a

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to give the meaning of words the
same way a dictionary does. In explaining words Rashi may
-- explain the meaning of an unknown word
-- explain the fine nuances of a known word
(For example Rashi may explain the nuances of synonyms)
-- explain the meaning of a phrase of words
-- Show a unifying theme to disparate meanings of one root
Rashi explains the word SHAAR which technically means GATE.
SHAAR-GATE can also refer to a whole CITY and especially to the
Judicial Bench (COURTHOUSE) of the city.

TODAYS LISTS
------------
2 days ago we presented a list where SHAAR means JUDGEMENT
or PUBLIC GATHERING PLACE to decide city actions (CITY COUNCIL)

In this 3rd list we review Rashis that explain that

Dt06-09a City MEZUZOTH (1) Courtyard (Me)
Dt09-06b City*5 Place MEZUZOTH on City/Country gates
Dt15-07c City*6 If you find POOR in your CITY
COMMENTS
*1 By law if a man dies without children his brother must
either marry the widow or undergo a ceremony (YEVAMAH
CEREMONY) to break his potential bond to her. This
ceremony is done IN THE GATE (=COURT)

*2 The expression JUDGE HIM IN THE GATE (which means
JUDGE HIM IN COURT occurs frequently in the Bible.
   See *10 for further nuances

*3 Rashi makes two points
   - Lot was Judge
   - He was appointed that day

Rashi knew that Lot was a judge from the phrase SHAAR
which means GATES & which is used to denote JUDICIAL PROCESS
For the explanation of how Rashi knew it was that day
   see *11

*4 The verse says to sell the non-Kosher meat to ALIENS IN
YOUR CITY. Rashi explains that these people are
   - ALIENS (not full fledged Jews)
   - RESIDENTS OF YOUR CITY
Hence Rashi explains them as Noachides who accept the
noachide laws and dont worship idols (Thus they are both
ALIENS and RESIDENTS). (If they did worship idols it
would be prohibited to let them live in your city)

*6 Rashi, besides translating SHAAR as CITY, makes
other points on these verses. Please visit
