VERSE: Gn09-20c
RASHIS COVERED: Gn09-20c Gn06-16c Gn06-16d
Gn09-20c
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

SUCCINCT SUMMARY:
-----------------
One of Rashis 10 major goals is to
- (a) illustrate complex geometric designs or
- (b) clarify complex algebraic computations.
This is called the Rashi method of SPREADSHEETS, since
SPREADSHEETS are one method of clarifying a complex
computational relationship. The SPREADSHEET method
can also refer to
- (c) any pre-supposition or consequence of a verse whose
meaning is ALREADY clear.

Today we bring verses illustrating methods (a) and (c).

EXAMPLE 1: Gn09-20c
-------------------
Gn09-20c states that
---------------------------------------------
Noach was a man of the land and
PLANTED A VINEYARD
---------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------
Noach took VINES into the ark which he
used for planting vineyards. (Rashi could
have further confirmed this using Gn06-21
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
[God told Noach] take for yourself
ALL EDIBLE FOODS and gather it to yourself
[in the ark]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
---------------------------------------------

Notice how the meaning of this verse is ALREADY
CLEAR. Rashi does not explain meaning but
explains a pre-supposition of the verse which
adds detail to it and enables us to understand
how Noach could plant a vineyard. Hence we
classify this as a SPREADSHEET method.

EXAMPLE 2: Gn06-16c
----------------------------
Gn06-16c states
--------------------------------------
Make a window for the ark
and COMPLETE THE ARK UPWARD TO A CUBIT
--------------------------------------

Rashi states
-------------------------------------
The SIDES of the ark were not perpendicular
like a building; rather the SIDES of the
ark SLOPED UPWARD like a TENT or like the
LETTER A. However the two sloping sides
did not stop at a point but rather stopped
a cubit apart. Here is a picture
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
              TOP OF ARK
              1 CUBIT (18 inches)
              _______
             / \
            / \
LEFT SIDE / \ RIGHT SIDE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The purpose of this construction is to
minimize damage from the flood rain

- a FLAT ARK ROOF would allow water to
gather thus weakening the root structure

- SLOPED WALLS with a POINTED TOP would
create a structural vulnerability at
the top of the ark; the point could
break leading to leaks
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
-------------------------------------

Here Rashi clarifies a crypic verse phrase
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
and COMPLETE THE ARK UPWARD TO A CUBIT
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Rashi clarifies this cryptic phrase by
painting a GEOMETRIC ILLUSTRATION that
makes the verse meaning clear

EXAMPLE 3 Gn06-16d
------------------
Gn06-16d states
-----------------------------------
Place the DOOR OF THE ARK ON THE SIDE
-----------------------------------

Rashi states
-------------------------------------
If the DOOR OF THE ARK was on the
roof then rain could seep thru. Therefore
the DOOR was placed on the side to
minimize leakage
-------------------------------------

COMMENTS
*1 Many people are familiar with the concept of the
FORMULA PLUG IN. That is a problem is solved by a
formula which you plug into.

But some problems intrinsically cannot (initally)
be solved by a formula. Instead you have to
formulate the problem algebraically and solve;only
then do you have the formula.

In other words these problems are solved by
the EQUATION vs the FORMULA

Thus the statement that the eldest gets double
suggests the following model.

- Suppose the are B brothers
- Suppose 1 of them is eldest
- The Fathers total assets are T (Total)

- Let A be the amount each brother inherits
We have no formula for A

- Then each of the B-1 brothers obtains A
- The eldest obtains double, 2A.
- Together this exhausts the Fathers estate, T

Hence we have (B-1)A + 2A = (B+1)A = T

This gives rise to the formula A = T / (B+1)

An example is a father with 100,000 and 4 children
- T=100,000
- B=4
- So each child take T/(B+1) = 100000/5 = 20,000
- Eldest takes 2*20000=40000
- Other 3 take 20000
- Total distribution =3*20000+40000=100000

See Rambam Inheritance Chapter 2

*2
Rashi gives a clarifying example to the verse GOD FORGIVES HER
--------------------------------------------------------------
- the women vowed to become a nazarite
- the husband annuled her vow
- but the husband did not tell her about the annulment
- the women then violated her vow
-
- In such a case God forgives the women (despite her
intending to commit a sin) because of the unknown
annulment of her husband
-
- We conclude that sin is an attribute of ACTION,not INTENT
