SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this
the WORD MEANING method.

Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Today we examine
the naming of words by FORM and FUNCTION. For example,
the PENTAGON and U.N. both have the FUNCTION, to UNITE
the world. The U.N. is named by its function (to unite)
while the PENTAGON is named by the FORM of its building.
We call this the Rashi method of 8 METHODS OF NAMING

EXAMPLES: NAMING BY APPEARANCE
------------------------------

EXAMPLE Lv22-22c
----------------
A CRACKED lip is called a FISSURED lip since
both CRACKS and FISSURES have similar forms
(They however apply to different items:
FISSURES are in STONE; CRACKS are in general items)

EXAMPLE Lv22-23a
----------------
If eg a person has 2 arms with one bigger than the
other we see he has a STRETCHED since the bigger
organ APPEARS strecthed.

EXAMPLE Lv22-24b
----------------
SQUEEZED refers to a CRUSHED testicle which
has the APPEARANCE of something SQUEEZED

EXAMPLE Lv22-24c
----------------
CHOPPED refers to a severely CRUSHED testicle
which has the APPEARANCE of something CHOPPED
up.

EXAMPLE Lv22-22d
----------------
A WART or HUMP is called an OVER-PRODUCED
or an OVER-GROWTH(Like English). The Hebrew
root Yud-Beth-Lamed refers to the process
of gathering PRODUCE from the fields. The
Tauv suffix indicates MUCHNESS. So the
YaBeLeTh would be an OVERPRODUCE or an OVERGROWTH
and would indicate a HUMP like APPEARANCE
characteristic of the WART and HUMP.

EXAMPLE Lv22-22e
----------------
The WINDING disease refers to an itching disease
by a person who must continuously SCRATCH him/herself
all over. Such a person has an APPEARANCE of someone
who WINDS all over him herself. Similarly the DRAG
is the name of an ITCHING disease since the continual
SCRATCHING has the appearance of a DRAGGING motion

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi supplements this explanation by
citing verses where RKA means to
FLATTEN OUT(eg Isa42-05,P136-07,
2S22-43, Ez06-11,Ex39-03, Nu17-04,
Jr10-09--in all these verses RKA
means to flatten out/crush)

*2 Perhaps the punchiest example is the following
- PENTAGON - named by form
- U.N. ----- named by function

*3 - STATURE is an attribute of HUMANS
- HEIGHT is an attribute of OBJECTS

*4 Rashi makes the same point (Using Old French)
at Gn49-26c

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi does say
--------------------------------------------
HAIL SHEEP means SHEEP WITH PATCHES; and
there are no supporting verses in the Bible
--------------------------------------------

It appears that Rashi is saying that this
meaning cant be proven.

But we did prove it using the principle of
form.

Rather what Rashi really means is that
-------------------------------------
this translation cannot be proven
using inference from USAGE IN OTHER
VERSES
-------------------------------------

Our point is that
-------------------------------------
This translation can be proven using
the principle of NAMING BY FORM
-------------------------------------

So Rashi was NOT making a magnanimous
statement that the meaning cant be
proven...rather he was simply stating
that it cant be proven by examining
other verses---it however can be proven
by using other rules such as naming
by FORM/APPEARANCE.

This is an important concept--there are
30-60 Rashi rules...often one rule doesnt
work but other rules do work. Understand
this.

*11 Rashi mentions a further point that the disease
in incurable. Rashi also cites other verses
where the Biblical root WINDING is used.
