VERSE: Ex13-05d

-------------------------------------------------------
              INTRODUCTION and OVERVIEW
-------------------------------------------------------
This posting dicsusses the so called "4 sons". These
are 4 Biblical chapters where we are told to teach our
children how God redeemed us from Egypt. As an example
of how to use this table: The chapter on the APATHETIC*1
son starts at Ex13-01 and finishes at Ex13-10

VERSE WICKED APATHETIC* SIMPLE WISE
=====  =======     ==========      ==========   =====
FROM Ex12-24 Ex13-01 Ex13-11 Dt06-20
TO Ex12-27 Ex13-10 Ex13-16 Dt06-25

NOTES
-----
*1 The translation APATHETIC (vs CAN'T ASK) is
due to the Rav, Rabbi Doctor Soloveitchick. The Rav pointed
out that the son who can't ask should be classified as SIMPLE
Therefore the Rav suggested that Ex13-01:Ex13-10 be termed
the APATHETIC (DON'T CARE) son.

The Rav further emphasized that no person is SIMPLE, or WISE
or APATHETIC or WICKED. Rather these terms are extremes and
templates---every student has some mixture of these attributes.

---------------------------------------------------------
Rashi Ex13-05d discusses the so called '4 sons'
---------------------------------------------------------
{LIST} These are the 4 chapters where the Bible discusses
telling the children what happened in Egypt. Each chapter
is associated with a certain learning type. The reasons
for these associations are summarized in the footnotes.

SON VERSE TEXT
===        =======         ====
Wicked Ex12-26 And when your son SAYS to you WHAT IS..
Simple Ex13-14 And when your son ASKS you..
Wise Dt06-20 when your son ASKS
Apathetic Ex13-05
                                     *1*2

*1 The wicked son rhetorically and cynically SAYS his questions.
Hence he is classified as WICKED. The apathetic or "don't care
son" does not ask and hence is classified as APATHETIC. The
distinction between the SIMPLE and WISE son is because of the
content of their question: The simple son simply says WHAT IS THIS
while the wise son says WHAT ARE THE STATUES, LAWS...(In other
words he has more distinctions).

*2 Although this can't be seen in the English the entire WICKED
son chapter is in PLURAL while the other chapters are mixtures
of plural and singular. In other words there is an emphasis that
the wicked son became wicked because he joined a "bad group"(Plural)
(The chapter for the APATHETIC son is totally in the singular
indicating that he is lonely and needs love).

--------------------------------------------------------------
Rashi Ex13-09a discusses how the PERSONAL element should
be emphasized in teaching the APATHETIC SON
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ex13-09 (APATHETIC) And the Tfillin will be FOR YOU as a sign
Ex13-16 (SIMPLE) And the Tfillin will be as a sign
                                              *1

*1 Notice how the APATHETIC chapter has FOR YOU while the SIMPLE
SON chapter does not. If you do a simple count you will see that
the APATHETIC SON CHAPTER has more PERSONAL words (FOR YOU)than
the other 3 chapters. The implied lesson is that when dealing
with the APATHETIC SON we should not use LOGIC but rather SYMBOLS
and emphasis on PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with God

-----------------------------------------------------
Rashis Ex13-08b, Ex13-09a, Ex13-04a deal with the fact
that there are more SYMBOLS mentioned in the APATHETIC
SON CHAPTER. This suggests a pedagogy method for outreach
based on Symbols and gentle communication vs logic
----------------------------------------------------------

SON VERSE SYMBOLS MENTIONED
===        =======  =========================================
Wicked Ex12-26
Simple Ex13-11 1st born redemption tfillin
Wise Dt06-20
Apathetic Ex13-01 1st born redemption Spring Seder*1 Tfillin
                            *2 *3 *4 *5

*1 Actually the verse says "Because of THIS God redeemed me"
Rashi simply says that the word THIS indicates SOMETHING being
pointed to (like a Seder plate).

*2 *3 *4 Note the greater number of symbols used both for
the simple son and the apathetic son (no symbols except
the Passover offering) are used by the Wicked son.

This suggests a pedagogy method when dealing with APATHETIC
and SIMPLE people---use many symbols and be personal.
(As an example of how to use symbols in outreach Rashi
suggests telling the child that God cared for us and redeemed
us in Spring, not in the Rainy or Cold season.
